I did all the steps necessary prior to running Hijack This. The problem I'm having is that Spybot detected malware or a trojan called Altova Stylevision on my computer and I removed the program using add/remove and also manually removed it from program files. Theres still something there thats causing it to try to redownload everytime I move an icon or file on my desktop and sometimes when I'm doing nothing at all. I read somewhere that Altova Stylevision is indeed malware. I had downloaded it in a web scripting class that I took, not knowing that it is malware.
Can you please look through my registry files to see if theres stuff in it that I don't know about thats causing this to happen. I want to rid my registry of all the junk but I need your help to do this. Thanks in advance.

Are you running Norton and AVG anti-viral? If so, please uninstall one of those.
Also, please disable spybot teatimer. It will prevent the fix.

You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions to follow while you complete this procedure.

Please save Hijack This in a permanent folder (i.e. C:\HJT). This ensures backups are saved and accessible.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

from my registry but I followed your instructions and did it anyway. My sbc browser's still working fine as is Microsoft Office 2003.

Is ATF Cleaner the same type of program as "Cleanup"? It seems to be and if so, should I remove "Cleanup" from my computer?
My NAV liveupdate expires this fall so I may reinstall AVG free. I would like your opinion about whether or not AVG free is comparable in quality to NAV 2005. If not, is there a high quality antivirus program that you would recommend (even if I have to pay for it)?
One last question, do you need for me to submit a new Hijack this log here now?

Removing the 04 Microsoft entry is just emoving a resource hog from the start-up. It should just make your machine more efficient.

Do you pay for AVG or use AVG free? I guess I want the advice of a pro.
Lastly, Altova Stylevision 2005 kept downloading itself whenever I clicked Yahoo update manager (I dont click YUM anymore). I always thought it was safe to click YUM before and I also thought it was necessary to keep everything updated. Any advice about what to do about YUM?

I use AVG free. And you can ask me anything...except my weight.

I always check what they want to update when they ask to update. A lot of times we get in the habit of just clicking yes, yes, yes. Please read what you are checking yes to. One program I thoroughly trust asked if I wanted to install yahoo toolbar....I was checking yes, yes, yes and that stopped me in my tracks.

Glad everything is running well. I will keep this open a few days in case you have any troubles.

We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.

First, let's reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.

* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNSELECT Show hidden files and folders.
* CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

Next, let's clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

System Restore will now be active again.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:

• SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  
• SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  
• IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.

You should also have a good firewall. Here are 3 free ones available for personal use:

• Sygate Personal Firewall
  
• Kerio Personal Firewall
  
• ZoneAlarm

and a good antivirus (these are also free for personal use):

• AVG Anti-Virus
  
• Avast Home Edition

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit

• Microsoft Windows Update

monthly. And to keep your system clean run these free malware scanners

• AdAware SE Personal
  
• Spybot Search & Destroy

weekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.
