CAVEAT: Debian Woody's cfdisk appears to do something to the MBR of the harddrives that silently locks the ASUS PC-DL motherboard (and possibly others) during attempts to boot from the hard-drive. This had us confused for ages, and we didn't realise quite what was going on until we spotted that an identical system, that hadn't been near cfdisk, gave an error message on screen when there was no operating system, rather than just given silence. Given that the rest of the system (including BIOS) was configured identically, something was clearly up. If you get this problem such that you cannot boot from the hard-disk any more, you may need to boot from a MS Windows rescue floppy and us DOS fdisk to do an fdisk /MBR. If you sensibly install your boot loader to a (boot) partition rather than the MBR, you ought be able to safely fdisk /MBR without breaking your boot loader (or anything else for that matter.) If you don't have access to a suitable fdisk, you can just delete the RAID array and remake it using the relevant BIOS options instead, which should remake the MBR for you as well (although removing everything on the RAID array in the process!)
