Hello everyone!

I am new to this forum but from what i seen so far it looks really nice. I have researched my topic/problem thouroughly on Google before coming and asking for help here. I have also read the rules of the forum (troubleshooting steps that i must take) and how to remove the most common problems. Unfortunately my problem does not fit in that category. I am running Windows XP SP2, ZA anti-virus and firewall, Ad-aware 6.0, Spybot S & D and HijackThis. Thank you very much in advance for your time and effort to help me!

The Problem: I am usually a really security-aware person but recently i was infected by this virus/spyware/trojan (i am not sure what exactly it is). What it does is it creates shortcuts entitled "exsplorer" on 'My Desktop', 'My Favourites' and 'My Documents' and other numerous places. I have noticed that just before creating these shortcuts my ZA advisor pops-up and asks me that a "win*something*.temp.exe" file wants to open a process. I then deny the opening of the process. Right after this the shortcuts are created. Everytime the ZA advisor pops-up the file that wants to open the process is different but ALWAYS has an extention of ".temp.exe" and a "win" bit at the front.

Troubleshooting actions taken: I have done a full system scan with ZA and Trend Micro Housecall. They both come up with a "Win32.Trojan.Dialer.hz". All my anti-virus and syware removal tools have their definitions updated. I have also scanned with Ad-aware and Spybot but nothing unusual comes up (only tracking cookies and the sort).

    • *Restart the computer.
      *as soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
      *Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
      *press Enter.
  • Run EWIDO
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Start Scan
  • Let the program scan the machine
  • While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK
• Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report
  • Save the report to your desktop
• Reboot your machine and post back a new HJT log and the ewido .txt log file you saved by using Add Reply

Notice that in the middle of the HijackThis Log there are three sites listed that are put into the Trusted Zone. I removed these sites from the Trusted Zone (of Internet Explorer) and then did another HijackThis scan and the sites where no longer there. They seem to appear only when that weird ".tmp.exe" application fails to open the process and all the "exsplorer" icons appear.

While i waited for a reply from you i continued my Googling. I searched for one of those weird files and this is the only result i got:

The website suggests that:

Scan your computer using Hijackthis. After scan locate line O20 - Winlogon Notify: winzdn32 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\win???32.dll. ??? is replaced with any 3 symbols. Go to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\, find win???32.dll file and rename it adding .txt extention (win???32.dll.txt). Restart the computer.

The line specified above IS present on both logs that i made but in the second one (after running Ewido) the file is missing.

What do you think? Should i follow their advice? Can you think of anything else?

1. You appear to be missing one important program on that computer: An antivirus.
You need to install an antivirus program as soon as you can and run a complete scan of the computer.
I suggest AVG - it's free!

AVG Free AntiVirus

Choose one, install it, and then run a full scan. Let it quarantine/delete anything it finds. Let me know if there is anything that it reports but can not remove.


2. Please run the following program:

• Please download WinHelp2002's DelDomains by right-clicking on the following link, and choosing "Save Target As": DelDomains.inf to your Desktop

• Then go to the desktop, right click on DelDomains.inf, and choose Install. You may not see any noticeable changes or prompts; this is normal.
  
• Then please restart your computer, and post a new HijackThis log.

I already have an Anti-virus. I even mentioned that in my first post. I am running the full Zone Alarm Security Suite (includes firewall and antivirus). I did a full system scan and nothing came up. I also scanned with Spybot and Ad-aware and nothing came up.

I downloaded the DelDomains thing and installed it as you said. I restarted and re-immunized my Spybot. Here is the HijackThis log after i ran DelDomains and restarted:

I think my system is now clean. I am not aware of any other spyware or malware on my computer. The weird files "tmp.exe" no longer pop up asking for permission to open a process thus the 'exsplorer' icons stopped appearing. Thank you very much!

Congratulations, your log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

Reconfigure Windows XP to hide hidden files:

• Click Start. Open My Computer.
• Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.
  
• Under the Hidden files and folders heading deselect "Show hidden files and folders".
• Check the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
• Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

2. Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 onlyDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

3. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE

• Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
• Left click on "System Restore Tab"
• Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
• Left click on "Apply"

Reboot your System

TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE

• Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
• Click on "Apply"

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

• Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
• Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
• How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
• How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

To protect yourself further:

• Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
• MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
• Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
