i went to the coffee shop yesterday and went to connect to the wireless network. my computer showed nothing. i just assumed they didn't have wireless anymore and went on with my day. here, at home, i should normally be able to pick up at least three (locked) networks and nothing is showing up. i went to another coffee shop today where there IS a network and many others, and the same error showed up. i downloaded all of the windows updates and it didn't work.

i have a gateway and it operates on XP. I dont know what's going on.

What make/model of Laptop are you using? The first thing that you should check for is that your Laptop's wireless switch / button is turned on -- you may have accidently disabled it. Check your laptop for a physical switch (the location will vary depending on the laptop), and ensure it is enabled / turned on... That said, some laptops don't have a wireless switch It could also be a function within your laptop; consult the manual if you're unsure.

Did you download those updates before or after your wireless problems began?

i downloaded the updates after the problem occured. there isn't a physical switch on my laptop for the wireless. it's a gateway but i'm not sure which model. i've re-attached the image to this post..

Is it possible that the Wireless Network Adapter for your computer is faulty? How long have you had the laptop for?

What happens when you try to add a wireless network manually? Does it give you any error?

Please goto Start --> Run --> type CMD and press OK --> then type: IPCONFIG /ALL - please post the results here by right-clicking on the Command Prompt window, selecting 'Select All', pressing the Enter key, and then posting on this forum. Alternately, you can save your information to a text file by using the following command: IPCONFIG /ALL > C:\ipconfig.txt -- navigate to that text file, and copy/paste the information from it.

Please goto Start --> Run --> type EVENTVWR and press OK --> Now, look under the System log for any errors and/or warnings. If you find any, please post the relevant heading, along with the details inside by double clicking on the error/warning, and then copy/pasting the information from within.

There are lots of warnings and errors that go back to when I got the computer.. the warnings are mostly Dchp and Tcpip.
TCP/IP has reached the security limit imposed on the number of concurrent TCP connect attempts.

Sorry for the late response, I've been busy lately..

Could you please post some of those DHCP and DCOM errors? That TCPIP warning really only affects you if you're being disconnected from the Internet -- since you can't even connect, that's not a problem.

Your IP Config below seems to show that you can connect fine when you hardwire your laptop to an AC -- is this correct?

Goto Start --> Run --> type services.msc and press OK --> Scroll down to Wireless Zero Configuration (it'll be at the bottom) --> is it running? If not, right-click and select Properties --> Click Start -- also, ensure that Start Up type is set to Automatic --> click OK. Restart your computer if necessary.

• Right-click My Network Places and select Properties from the pop-up menu.
• Right-click the Wireless Network Connection icon and select Properties from the pop-up menu.
• Select the Wireless Networks tab.
• Under the Preferred Networks heading, you will see a list of every wireless network you have ever connected to -- is your wireless Network listed there? Are there other Wireless Networks listed there? If so, are they listed as 'Preferred'?
• Select the wireless network you wish to automatically connect to and click the Properties button.
• Select the Connection tab.
• Ensure that the box next to Connect when this Network is in range, is checked and click OK.

I can use LAN connections fine but the wireless does not work -- plugged into an a/c adapter or not.

I checked to make sure that the Wireless Zero Configuration is on and good and it is...

Hi,

From the looks of things, I'd guess that the wireless component of your adapter has become faulty. I'd suggest that you try to borrow an external (USB) wireless adapter from a friend / family member, and then attempt to connect via that.

I really can't think of any other reason why only your wireless would fail to work (if it was both, then it'd be a different situation). You could try re-installing your adapter, and then ensure you have the latest drivers, but other than that, I'm afraid there's not much more I can suggest.
