Hi there,

My computer is running quite slow recently.

When i click Ctrl Alt Delete, then click on processes, there is around 54 processes running?

When i end processes it speeds up my computer, but only processes like blutooth manager etc...

I end some other processes and it does things to my computer like doesnt show my desktop etc, so i restart my computer and it all works again.

My question is, what processes can you end and what ones and important and you shouldnt end?

Click start then run, type msconfig then press enter then start up, remove the ticks from most things there, the exceptions being firewall and anti virus / anti spyware programmes, click apply and reboot, tick do not start the configuration utility when windows loads to the desktop, click apply

The programmes will still run, but only when you need them, they will take longer before being available to use

I'm fond of Mike Lin's StartUpCPL which puts a tab in your Control Panel.

54 processes is a lot to boot to. I have Norton and a couple of optionals running at start up, and I still only get 33 processes.

I can see the big list, but there is like loads there and i dont know what ones to disable?

Can i give you a big list of them all and i will post it up here and then you can tell me what ones to disable?

Hi, if you go to off toppics here, there is a thread about "just one program", there I have linked easycleaner because it is so simple and yet, it controls startups, history, cookies, files, spacesaving, processes, etc., etc., it is for the ultimet normal person's tool, yes it is free and yes it just lumps everything together so you are not thinking at some time now where was that place that I must go to do x or z. The bad thing about it is that the selfintroduction reads "hi, my name is tony and I am 14years old, hope you like my program" like there is no hope for someone my age then :-)

Hi Allsortshop.

The list of processes you gave are difficult for us to analyze it would be easier if you make us a startup log from hijackthis.

Hijackthis

Extract "Hijackthis" into its own folder and run it.

> Click on "Open the Misc Tools Section"
> Then click "Generate StartupList Log"

Save the log here. this will make it so much easier to analys your processes. Thanks....

I almost started to work this list, but I'm really cranky today. If that were a text file, I could cut and paste. Some of that stuff I would have to Google, and that is what I suggested you do in the last post, so why should I? Many of the processes running are Norton or Windows, and belong there. Things like your iPod and printer don't have to be (hint: HP can hog as many resources as Norton if you let it.) I gave you a link to Mike Lin's program which will let you experiment with your start up preferences rather simply, without going through msconfig.

If you were a newbie, I might take the time to do that list line by line, but I've read many of your posts, and know you are experienced and computer savvy enough to do it your own self. Here's the deal- if you get stuck, or have a legit question, I'll help.

ps if you really think Firefox is "more trustworthy" than IE you are fooling yourself. They both have their vulnerabilities, and Firefox is attracting enough attention to warrant exploitation now, too.

Sorry I am just reposting his log here for members to view better. My sole comment is that Norton is a known resorce hog which slows the machine a lot, perhaps a lighter one then, oh and a Spring clean of the comp would be good move here.
