Since you are trying to uninstall an update. Try going to FILE-->NEW TASK and typing in appwiz.cpl. This should open the ADD & REMOVE PROGRAMS window. Probably won't work, but it's worth a shot.

Both regedit.exe and appwiz.cpl will open up. The update KB908531 is not there. What am I to try to do in the registry editor?

From Registry Editor, in the left pane, expand (click +) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, then SOFTWARE, then Microsoft, then Windows NT, then CurrentVersion, and click on Winlogon.
In the right pane, scroll down to Shell. If the value (under the Data column) is not Explorer.exe, double click on Shell, type Explorer.exe in the Value Data field, and click "Ok".
Close all open windows and reboot.
Do your programs now open?

yes the value for default is 'exefile'. another problem that occurs now along with not having a windows bar or desktop is the audio driver keeps going out. I reinstall the driver sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. not sure if there is any connection?

Download the attached file and Extract it to your desktop. Double click on the file to run it...accept the change.
Reboot and try your programs. Any change?

It's attached twice, to both post 25 and 23. You can probably remove one of them wannabe1.

If you are able, download and run HiJackThis on the machine. Attach a log to your next reply. This is a stand alone application...hopefully it will run.

I will run HiJackThis and attach the log.
Do you know how I can search for a file (ie run windows search)? I need to reinstall Quicktime. I know there is an installer on my computer but can't find it.
