Ewido finds Look2me, but didn't turn up QoolAid, which I *know* is on here, because Symantec anti-virus finds it. Tried to remove it, but it keeps rewriting itself into the registry when I try to delete it. Please let me know if there's anything else nasty in here that I haven't spotted.

Thank you guys so much for helping out with these evil programs...it's made my life a living nightmare of popups and I don't know where else to go.

Hi Lucy431 and welcome to the Geeks to Go Forums.

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your log.

Please download Look2Me-Destroyer.exe to your desktop.
  • Close all windows before continuing.
  • Double-click Look2Me-Destroyer.exe to run it.
  • Put a check next to Run this program as a task.
  • You will receive a message saying Look2Me-Destroyer will close and re-open in approximately 1 minute. Click OK
  • When Look2Me-Destroyer re-opens, click the Scan for L2M button, your desktop icons will disappear, this is normal.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove L2M button.
  • You will receive a Done Scanning message, click OK.
  • When completed, you will receive this message: Done removing infected files! Look2Me-Destroyer will now shutdown your computer, click OK.
  • Your computer will then shutdown.
  • Turn your computer back on.
  • Please post the contents of C:\Look2Me-Destroyer.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
If Look2Me-Destroyer does not reopen automatically, reboot and try again.

Regards,

Trevuren

Thank-you! The popups are still coming though, although (maybe) slightly different ones :whistling: Can you tell me if QoolAid is still on here, or anything else? Seems I opened the flood gates by visiting some site yesterday and suddenly there was adware all over the place.

A. Download and Save Blacklight to your desktop:
  • Double-click blbeta.exe
  • Accept the agreement and click NEXT.
  • In the following window, click SCAN
You'll see a list of all items found. There will also be a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers).

Copy and paste this log in your next reply. Do not proceed with step #2 or choose the rename option yet! I want to see the log first, because legitimate items can also be present there, such as "wbemtest.exe"

B. 1. Download FindQoologic.zipSave it to your Desktop
2. Click on FindQoologic.zip to open the file:
  • From the tasbar choose EXTRACT
  • From the mini window that pops up, choose "All files/folders" in the lower left-hand corner of the window
  • In the Extract to box, make sure that your Desktop is selected
  • Click on the EXTRACT button
  • A newly-created folder named Find-Qoologic will have appeared on your desktop
3. Click on the FindQoologic folder to open it:
  • Locate and double-click the Find-Qoologic.bat
  • Choose option 1 for Run Findqoologic by typing 1 and press enter
  • This will scan your system
  • Wait until a text opens.
4. Copy/Paste this text into your next reply.

I ran blacklight, didn't seem to find anything...here's the result:

The link you gave to FindQoologic doesn't work for me...couldn't even get there from the subratam home site (tool has been pulled?).... but I downloaded it somewhere else from the following link:

http://s3.invisionfr...hp?showtopic=69

It ran for a while, during which I got an anti-virus popup about another file (is that normal?), but here is the file:

PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL FILES FOUND BY THIS METHOD ARE NOT BAD FILES, THERE MIGHT BE LEGIT FILES LISTED AND PLEASE BE CAREFUL WHILE FIXING. IF YOU ARE UNSURE OF WHAT IT IS LEAVE THEM ALONE.

Still getting popups :whistling: One from something called UpSpiral and some others too. Again, they seem to be different from the ones I had before....am I just replacing some spyware with other stuff each time? Any way to immunize against further infections? I already have spybot immunization.

Your system was heavily infected. It takes several posts and scans before we can get it all cleaned up.

We must disable Spy Sweeper for it may interfere with our fix

To disable SpySweeper:
  • Right click on the SpySweeper icon in your System Tray (near the clock).
  • From the pop up menu, left click on Shields, this will open the program at the same time.
    • Under the Internet Explorer Tab, uncheck all boxes (if already checked).
    • Under the Windows System Tab, uncheck the following shields (if already checked):
    • Memory Shield
    • Spy Installation Shield
  • Under the Startup Programs Tab, uncheck the Startup Shield box (if already checked).
  • Under the Browser Add-ons Tab, uncheck the Browser Helper Object box (if already checked).
Note: Remember to re-enable these shields once we have completed our work.

Please disable Ewido Security Suite (EwidoGuard)

1. Launch Ewido
2. In the main window, click "Realtime protection" (in green indicating "Active") to change to inactive.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.
  • First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:
    • Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
    • Choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
    • Uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
    • Close the window with ok
  • Please RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

  • Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

    F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe, C:\WINDOWS\system32\vrngv.exe
    F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,gmtkgjs.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [wad6d353.dll] RUNDLL32.EXE wad6d353.dll,I2 000190570ad6d353

  • Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.

  • Reboot Your System in Safe Mode

How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode

    • Restart the computer.
    • As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
    • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
    • Press Enter.
  • Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and DELETE them (if they are present):

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\vrngv.exe
gmtkgjs.exe<==You will have to Search for this one
wad6d353.dll<==you will have to Search for this one

  • Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE

  • Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everything looks now.

Thanks again for your help Trevuren! I couldn't see vrngv.exe in the system32 folder, but I did a search and found something called:

"vrngv.exe -ID02594F.pf" in the prefetch folder...didn't think it could be doing any good there, so I deleted it, hope that was right.

There was no gmtkgjs file to be found, but I found and deleted wad6d353.dll.

Here's the new log:

Your log looks good. If you have no more malware-related problems that you are aware of, just give me the OK and we can start the final but essential cleanup procedures and recommendations.

Haven't had any more popups! Thanks so much for fixing this Trevuren! Can I remove all the gear we installed now? Do I need both Ewido *and* Symantec anti-virus? Any other settings I should change or be aware of?

Yes you need both. Symantec is an anti-virus while Ewido works mostly on spyware/adware/trojans. The other programs/fixes I had you download can be removed.

Congratulations, your log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

Reconfigure Windows XP to hide hidden files:
  • Click Start. Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading deselect "Show hidden files and folders".
  • Check the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
  • Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
2. Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 onlyDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

3. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
  • Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
  • Left click on "System Restore Tab"
  • Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
  • Left click on "Apply"
Reboot your System

TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
  • Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
  • Click on "Apply"
Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? (My Favorite)

Regards,

Trevuren
