Hi,

Not sure if this is where to ask but I'm sure someone can put me right.

I'v just bought a new PC, the old one was totally infested, but needed replacing anyway. I desparately don't want to let this one get in the same state and want to know the precautions I should take and any downloads that will help keep it clean. If this is covered somewhere else please just direct me to it.

Anti-Virus
AVG Anti-Virus
I have using this program for about 3 years now. It does alot better then Norton and plus its free.

Spyware
Ad-Aware
It works, make sure you scan the computer once a week.

Microsoft AntiSpyware
Microsoft AntiSpyware is still in beta but works quite well.


With all of these programs make sure to download the lastest updates. Also make sure that Windows itself is up to date. Hope that this helps.

Thanks!! There are so many choices I just didn't know which to use, I will go with the ones you suggested. Does one of those take care of Spyware ????

Would it be advisable to go IE to Firefox ??? I hear this is more secure.

You can if you want to, but Im still using IE. I have nerver had any problems with it being Hijack, but then again I dont allow anything to be installed if I dont know what it is. I have also use FireFox, I like it. I really like the tab browsing. Its all based on persons likes and dislikes. So download and install it, to see if you like it. Hope that this helps.

I just had to wipe out my computer and start from scratch as a result of catching so many viruses and spyware. After fixing it all I went out and got the zone alarm security suite and that thing has my computer locked down uber tight. I highly recommend using that in combination with microsoft antispyware.

So funny . Dont download any stupids anti virus or spyware .
Cause i'm a hacker , i know which program is hard to hack in . Norton antivirus 2005 is ok . But other anti program dont download load it . If u want to download a real strong anti virus program , Go and search -- Download " Kaspersky Antivirus " and other like "kaspersky Firewall "..

Norton Antivirus 2005 -- 75% protections = Medium
Other Anti Soft -- 50 -10 % = Low
Kaspersky -- 90 - 100% = Strong .

i liked norton antivirus 04 and 05 is probably better. it had weekly (usually on wednesday) updates and it even picked up spyware and adware which was nice. also, it ran nicely on my slow computer (only .4ghz which suxs) so it should run nicely on yours since it is brand new.

I'm not a huge fan of Kapersky and System Mechanic. That was one of the things that forced me to have to format my computer. I know the thing is good but no matter how tight the protection, if my machine wasn't going to work couldn't legitimize keeping it uber safe. So in other words, you're saying that ZoneAlarm Security Suite ain't all that good?

Kaspersky is very nice, but it can use a lot of system resources. I give a nod to my current AV program NOD32.
