Installation Initialization problem

I am using Windows 98 software as my pc is an old version.
I am not able to install any updates or softwares, yahoo messenger, msn, etc through web. The system is allowing to download, but later doesn't install the same after completing of download. Lastly, I tried to upgrate my yahoo messenger, but the system prompted that there is an invalid parameter in registry. The file expected size and return size are different. Hence installation was not initialized. Same for windows update gets failed after full download. Please help me to resolve this problem.
