css layout instead of tables

You can use CSS for anything that tables can do and actually have WAY more flexibility by using CSS for layout than with tables.
Tables were designed for tabulature data, not layout. CSS was developed FOR layout.
People will say that CSS doesnt work with well, but actually IE is the problem and there are plenty of work arounds.. (you should be using Firefox, Opera or Safari anyway )...
CSS is a much more powerful layout tool. Once you get past the initial learning curve it's really not too difficult to learn, plus there are TONS of help sites on the web to give you examples and get you started.
