I know you did not ask for another option, but you might consider opera as an alternative. it has similar features that firefox has and even some more, which i personally consider nice.
though it does lack on the ability to further advance with extensions and plug-ins (which are huge on firefox) as you can with firefox.
still, any one of these will easily beat IE in almost any category.

Hey there daniel_c
I guess it oppinion. Some people still like IE even though it sucks big big big time . Firefox has way way more things than IE , what I mean by this is, its got tones of plugins better UI (User Interface) I find it more user friendly and most of all its faster.
How To Tweak Firefox:

Right now, Secunia lists 22 unpatched security holes in IE 6.x, and only 2 in Firefox 1.x. So from a security stand point, Firefox is more secure.
Firefox also offers more options and plugins to enhance your browsing. The basic use of both browsers is the same, and migrating is simple. The installation program imports all your favorites, so you don't have to do it yourself. I would recommend getting Firefox, and looking at the most popular Firefox extensions and getting Adblock, Foxcaster, Fasterfox, and Tabbrowser Preferences. Read what they can do, experiment with the settings, and make your browsing experience to your liking.
For example, I see the weather whenever I log on, I have very few ads appear while I surf, my pages appear very quickly, and when I click on a link that would open a new IE window, I get a new tab. With the tabs I can easliy see all the websites I've got open and I don't have a task bar full of programs. Once you get a feel for those, take a look at others to see if any appeal to you.
It's worth a try since it's free. And if you don't like it, just uninstall it. You have nothing to lose.
