Cannot complete the CD Writing Wizard.
There was an error in the writing process. The disc you have attempted to write may no longer be usable.

What do you want to do?

O Eject this disc and try making another CD
O Delete the files that are waiting to be written
O Save the files so that I can try again later

CD software developed under license from Roxio, Inc. To close this wizard, click Finish.

I've been trying to create a CD-R disk, using Windows XP's CD Writing Wizard. The files are both data and pictures, Total File Size: 961 KB.

All updates including SP2 are current.

I have ensured that "enable CD Recording on this drive" is checked.

I set IMAPI service to automatic (At RUN command line, type: "services.msc /s" to access IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service and set to Automatic).

I set the burning speed from "fastest" to 1x, still cannot burn the CD.

The CDRW/DVDRW drive is an external Plextor 740UF. Their website states that no drivers are needed or required for Windows XP. This is an IBM Thinkpad with XP Professional SP2. There is plenty of disk space available. Total: 27GB, Available: 13.4GB.

I have Nero 6 Express, but when I try to use Nero, the system appears to lock up.

I've Googled, Yahood and MSN'd to no avail. The listings for those with the same problem appear to be unsolved.

I checked support.Microsoft.com and did everything suggested. Even found the Newgroups at http://support.micro...ps/default.aspx under English, Windows, Windows XP, Photos. Again, no help and no solutions.

I called Microsoft to report the problem. I guess Bill Gates is just still not rich enough. They wanted $35 just to report the problem. I called again and at least got to report the problem but didn't get any technical help.

I tried this:

-> Go to the property of the CD/DVD burning drive: (1)click AUTO PLAY TAB; (2)SELECT BLANK CD; (3) Put a check on "PROMPT ME EACH TIME TO CLOSE AN ACTION" at the bottom of that PROPERTY popup screen and Click " OK". --->>> Didn't work!

I found this and tried it as well:

To copy photos to CD-R or CD-RW using XP

1. Insert a blank CD-R into your CD drive. Wait about 15-20 seconds for XP to recognize that a CD-R has been inserted. A window may open, with a variety of options in it. You don't need any of the options in this window to copy to a CD-R. There is a Cancel button at the bottom of this window. Click on it to close this window. If this window does not open, this is fine just go to step 2.

2. Click on My Computer and navigate to the folder where your pictures are located. Open the folder so you can see the files you want to copy.

3. You now need to select the files you want to copy. Do you want to copy all the files in the folder? If so, hold the Ctrl key down and press the letter A. This will select (highlight in blue) all the files in the folder.
If you want to select only some of the files, click on the first file you want to select. Remove your finger from your mouse, hold the Ctrl key down and click on the second file you want to select. Continue doing this until all the files you want to copy are selected. Each time a file is selected it will be highlighted in blue. If the files you want to select are listed in a row, you can do it this way. Click on the first file, remove your finger from the mouse. Hold the Shift key down and click on the last file you want. All the files between the first and last file you clicked on will be highlighted in blue.

4. Once you have selected the files you want to copy, look at the menu on the left of the selected files. The top menu should be "Picture Tasks". The last item listed under "Picture Tasks" is "Copy to CD". Click on it. The other way is to right click on one of the selected pictures. A menu will open. Click on Send To. Click on your CD drive on the opening list.

5. The copying process will start (a small window opening at the top of your screen indicating the progress, wait until completed, also you may not see this window if you are copying just a few files because the operation is too fast) and you will get a message, right hand corner bottom of your screen, "You have files waiting." Click on it.

6. A window will open. It will show you the photo files you just selected to copy. Look at the menu on the left and click on "Write these files to CD"

7. A Wizard box will open. Just follow the directions on the screen to complete the job.

8. Once you have copied the photos to the CD you may want to copy more to it in the future. Just insert it instead of inserting a blank CD and follow the same directions. Just make sure you have enough space on it to add more photo files. A CD will hold 700 MB but with photo files, don't try to fill it. Limit to about 200 - 300 photo files per CD. Otherwise it can take a long time to open this CD to view the files, but if you don't mind the time you can fill it.

9. During copying, you may get the following messages "File XXXX.jpg has extra information..." or "The thumbnails information will be lost..." In both cases, click on YES, not on Skip, in the message box.

Some problems with the above:

1. You looked for the command "Copy to CD", but it is not there. If so, repair this way. Click on Start, click on Run and type the following in the opening textbox:

REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL

And press the Enter key. Note that there is a space between .32 and SHI.

You did the above, but still no "Copy to CD" command available. Go to step 2 below and check if your drive is set to recording.

2. You now can find the "Copy to CD" command but it still does not work. Check if your drive is set for recording. Open My Computer, look under Devices with removable storage and right click on your CD drive. Click on Properties. A window will open. Click on the Recording tab. Then Enable recording. You tried this, but you can't find a Recording tab. If so, update the CD driver so it is compatible with XP or something else is wrong as under items 3 or 4 below.

3. It still does not work. You may have installed some CD copying software to copy music CDs. If so, this may be interfering with XP. If you use Roxio, update your version to at least 5.3 or above. If you have Roxio
7, use this to copy photos (make a data CD with Roxio 7). If you have other music CD copying software make sure you upgrade to a version that will not interfere with XP.

4. You may have purchased a new computer with a CD/DVD burner. If so, don't use XP to copy to CD, use the software supplied by the manufacturer and select the copy data files if there is no specific copy photo files option.

5. Instead of using the Copy to CD command you used the Send to command and no CD drive is listed there. If you upgraded to XP you should check that you have a driver for your CD drive compatible with XP or first check that your drive is Enable for recording as given above. Sometimes you get the instruction to send to a writable CD drive on the list but you don't get writable, you get drag and drop or simply the CD drive letter. Click on it, provided you have checked that the drive is Enabled for recording.

6. If none of the above works, check the manufacturer of the CD drive web site for a driver compatible with XP, particularly if you upgraded to XP.

---->>> None of this helped!

Then it was suggested: I have tried a lot of fixes, all to no avail. In talking with friends, we think it might be a problem with one of the "Windows updates."

Couldn't find a solution there anywhere!!!

I also tried to fix some Windows XP files from the original disk. It was suggested that there were 3 files that could have been corrupted: Autoexec.nt, command.com and ?? (sorry, can't find the post and can't remember the file); however, it didn't work either.

Also tried this suggested post: "I may have finally discovered a solution to this issue. On my machine, the problem was an improperly registered Ole32.dll file. Fixing this immediately solved the problem. To do the same, follow these steps... 1. Click "Start," click "Run," type "regsvr32 ole32.dll" in the Open box (without the quotation " marks), and click OK. 2. Click OK when you receive the following message: DllRegisterServer in OLE32.DLL succeeded. Your CD Writing Wizard should now work. Please post a response here to let others know of your success. By the way, if this fix doesn't work, there is no harm in the steps above - Ole32.dll is supposed to be registered by default. " --->>>> Didn't work!

I have uninstalled Nero, but couldn't seem to download the files from Nero.com for the "clean uninstall."

The only thing I have found to work was to install a freeware program called CD Burner XP at www.cdburnerxp.se

Would love to know if anyone else has found a solution that would work with the XP CD Writing Wizard.

ANY HELP WOULD BE SO GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!! THANK YOU!!!

Is this what you tried to use for Nero

http://www.nero.com/..._CleanTool.html

Nero and Roxio do not like each other so removing one may help, did you update Nero 6

I'm having the same problem, with roughly the same configuration except that I don't have Nero, and the CD drive is an internal Matshita. It's hard to tell, since it has been some time since I attempted to write files to CD, but I believe the problem may date from my last set of critical/security updates from Microsoft, entitled "IBM - Other Hardware - IBM PM Device" (Haven't figured out what that is yet.)

I've tried a number of the suggestions above (setting process to automatic, re-registering, reducing speed), but still no dice.

Curious but somewhat reluctant about the freeware product mentioned in the first post.

Any further thoughts welcome.

As a follow-up to the post above, I believe I have resolved the problem, which may or may not have been two separate problems.

I believe my INITIAL problem was actually a corrupt file. I was copying a large number of .jpg files in folders, and one folder gave me some trouble a few days ago. I bailed, and figured I'd come back to it later.

I'm reasonably certain that it was SINCE that time that I got the above referenced windows update, which, when I checked out, was a not particularly well-documented item dated 2003.

From that point forward, I was unable to copy ANY files to CD.

So, after trying the few things mentioned in my previous post (which are still in place), I decided to revert my system status back to last Friday, the day before the update.

As soon as i did that, I was able to copy files to CD-Rs again. EXCEPT for one single file which I now assume to be corrupt, and which I have now deleted. It has been smooth sailing since then.

So, what I've taken away from this is: a) Try the suggestions in the thread above (you never know). b) Watch out for recent Windows updates and c) Look for corrupt files.

Good luck to anyone else encountering this.

ok. regsvr32 ole32.dll worked for me! very strange, but I had 3 computers here at home (mine, wife's son's) that all quit writing to CDs at same time! we don't normally use each other's computers, and we haven't installed the same applications recently so I don't know how this happened. BTW, haven't yet tried this fix on my wife's and son's computers.

MY SOLUTION
************

For me, none of the above worked. It was a driver issue:

1. Start -> Run -> devmgmt.msc
2. Click + next to "DVD/CD-ROM drives"
3. Click on your CD-RW
4. Press the "delete" key
5. Click OK to confirm delete
6. Restart your computer. XP should find the new hardware and re-install a standard driver.
7. Try burning a CD. I bet you $1 that it works. If not, double or nothing if you set your burn rate to 8x.

* Note: for special features you may need to download the driver from the manufacturer. Get it from their web site, probably under a "support" link. Save it to your desktop. You can It's not too hard:
1. Start -> Run -> devmgmt.msc
2. Click + next to "DVD/CD-ROM drives"
3. right-click your CD-RW
4. select "update driver"
5. click "no not at this time" and click OK.
6. Install from a list...
7. Choose driver to install (the one you saved to your desktop)

Hope this helps!

5incerely,

I hope someone else answered by now. I am not an expert or a 'geek' but this is what happened to me.

I was having the same error until I uninstalled Studio10 (my software) defragged my C: drive after getting rid of unneeded files.

Re-installed Studio 10 as the 'compact' mode (smaller install) and then for some reason everything worked. I still get the stupid cd writing error when burning but I just ignore it and the DVD burns okay.
I just used Studio10 so I hope this will assist you. I figure my hard drive was too small to take such a large program as Studio.

My files all went into a TEMP folder on C Drive. I hope you found your files. Try to search for a
*.avi or *.mpg or whatever extension your software uses. Studio uses a *.VOB when it first makes the files, then I have to convert it to a .mpg and then an .avi. A lot of steps in Studio 10.

Good luck. :)
