Hi. My daughter's friends were downloading all kinds of stuff on her computer, and now it won't boot properly. It's a rebuilt computer that uses Windows 2000. I spoke with her by phone yesterday [we live 75 miles apart], and this is what she said happens:

It says "Starting Windows 2000", then goes into blue screen. The message then appears:

Inaccessible Boot Drive.
1) Check for Viruses
2) Remove any newly installed hard drives/hard drive controllers
3) Check the hard drive configuration/make sure it is properly configured/terminated
4) run check disk/f for configuration.

It also has the following error code: 0x0000007b(0x82777ab0,0xc0000032)

She cannot even get into safe mode beyond this screen. She tried restoring the computer through the Win2000 restore program, no good. She also tried debugging and got the error message 0x0000007b(0x827e72d0,0xc0000032)

I plan to be there for Easter weekend and would like to help her with this. Any suggestions, further questions for me/her or recommendations would be appreciated!!

There are lots of issues that cause this, but given your description, I tend toward disk filesystem error

If you have a windows xp or 2000 disk, start your pc with that in the cd-rom and set the pc to boot to cd-rom first (this is generally the default)

when setup begins, it will give you a couple options, install or repair with recovery console.

Choose R for repair with recovery console

you will need to choose the windows installation (choose a number, likely 1), and then supply the administrator password used to setup the machine

at the c:\windows prompt

type
chkdsk /r
<enter>

let this run...it will take a while

Reboot and remove xp or 2000 cd

Like I said, this was a rebuilt computer. As such, we did not receive a disk for any of the programs that came on it, including Windows 2000. However, before all this happened, I loaned her my CD burner, which allowed her to burn a complete copy of her computer. Could that possibly be used to restore her computer? And if so, how would she use these?
