Hi billyd,

IRC/BackDoor.SdBot appears to be posing a bit of a problem for many users. We will tackle this problem before doing any clean up of your log, if necessary.

1) You appear to be running 2 anti-virus software programs at the same time. This often leads to major conflicts. Please disable one of the two.

2) If you are using a firewall and this bug keeps coming back then your system is still dirty. I would first Disable System Restore and rescan with the AV that I kept. Re-enable your System Restore immediately after the scan has finished and REBOOT your system.

3) If you are still having problems, go to Recommended Programs where you will find a choice of several free online virus scanners. Choose one, preferably two. First make sure that any virus shield that you may currently have runnning on your system is turned off and select the full system clean option. Let them remove everything they find. Re-enable the shield immediately after the scan and REBOOT your system.

4) Download the most current version of Hijackthis (v.1.99.1) to a folder of its own. HJT needs to be in its own folder so that the program itself isn't deleted by accident. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

1. Please go to your 'My Documents' folder, right-click and select 'New > Folder' and name the folder 'HijackThis'.

2. Download Hijackthis from:HERE

3. Double Click on 'HijackThis.zip' to extract and install HijackThis.exe to the new folder.

4. Close ALL windows except HJT

5. SCAN with HJT and SAVE LOG. (a notepad window will open with the log in it when you click Save Log) (Ctrl-A to'select all', Ctrl-C to 'copy')

6. POST the log in this thread using 'Add Reply' (Ctrl-V to 'paste')

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS MOST OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTER

Please report any problems that you may have encountered during these procedures.

;) Hi Trevuren,
Thanks for getting back to me. 1st I am runing AVG only. Norton came with HP, and has expired. I can drop it from add/remove, if you think it is running in the back room. I was also comparing old HJT log from 2/15 and did not see 04 entry of (MSPluginSrvc)p3.exe there are 3 04 entries on this p3 exe. and I don't know what it is? I moved to vault the virus AVG found. I will do a new scan of AVG and new HJT scan, along with ADAware, spybot and CWShredder. I have been doing these scans at least twice a day from 2/15 when Admin helped me last time. All was going well until I noticed same problem today, send much more than recieving. The scans will take some time so I will post them later in the morning.
thanks for your response and all of your help.

Hi billyd,

1)Yes, I strongly recommend that you uninstall all Norton components if you are no longer subscribed to their service. Norton is a HUGE resource hog and, I repeat, that 2 antivirus applications often conflict with each other on the same machine. I also suggest that you follow the instructions found on the Symantec site for its removal because it is notorious for leaving stuff hanging around.Uninstalling Norton AV 2003. If this is not your particular product just use their Search feature to locate yours and follow their instructions.

2) In my previous post, I requested that you download the most current version of HJT and set it up according to my directions. I see that this wasn't done. In order to help you I need the most up to date info possible and that it be located in a safe place. Please follow my instructions.

Download the most current version of Hijackthis (v.1.99.1) to a folder of its own. HJT needs to be in its own folder so that the program itself isn't deleted by accident. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

1. Please click on the "My Computer" icon, then the C: drive icon. Next Right click on the desktop and choose NEW from the list available then> Folder' and name the folder 'HijackThis'. The end result should resemble something like this C:\HijackThis\

Hi billyd,

I am glad to see that you were able to install the newest version of HJT in its own folder. This can prevent a lot of trouble. I don't know if you saw that you still had the old version running as well as the new.

I would like to to delete the older version:

C:\Documents and Settings\Billy.CAMILA\Desktop\HijackThis.exe (File only)

Also, I want you to uninstall the Norton/Symantec product as I suggested in my last post. Two Anti-virus programs very often conflict with each other. It is also considerably slowing down your system.

After completing both of these tasks, please run HJT, produce a SCAN and POST it into this thread

:tazz: Hi Trevuren,
I removed Norton, ran new scans, Adaware 3 negligable no big deal, shedder 0 coolsearch. and attached is HJT log. I still feel problem is related to that p3.exe (don't know what that is?) Thanks again, and look foward to hearing from you. I did not see old HJT 199.0 put shortcut in recycle bin and deleted from there. went to add/remove an only see 199.1.

Hi billyd,

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Now let's do some work on your log:

First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:

Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
*choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
*uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
*Close the window with ok
*All hidden files will now be visible

Close all browser windows and RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.
. Click the Config button located in the lower right hand corner of the HijackThis window.
. When the new screen opens, find and click the Miscellaneous Tools button.
. Then choose the Open Process Manager button.
. From the list of processes, hilight the following items by clicking them, ONE AT A TIME, then DELETE them by clicking the KILL button:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\p3.exe
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\FINDFAST.EXE
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\system32\sol.exe

Once all items have been KILLED, click the Back button which will return you to the HijackThis main window. Now place a check mark beside each one of the following Mandatory items as well as those Optional items that you choose based upon the information provided in green.

MANDATORY ITEMS

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {243B17DE-77C7-46BF-B94B-0B5F309A0E64} - C:\Program Files\Microsoft Money\System\mnyside.dll__SpybotSDDisabled (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSPluginSrvc] p3.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [MSPluginSrvc] p3.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSPluginSrvc] p3.exe
O4 - Global Startup: America Online 8.0 Tray Icon.lnk.disabled
O4 - Global Startup: Updates from HP.lnk.disabled

OPTIONAL ITEMS

The following items are considered to be either "not required", "seldom used" or "resource hogs". Their removal should considerably enhance the performance of your system.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AutoTKit] C:\hp\bin\AUTOTKIT.EXE
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Find Fast.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\FINDFAST.EXE
O4 - Global Startup: Office Startup.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA.EXE

Now with all the items selected, close all windows except for HijackThis and delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window and Reboot Your System in Safe Mode

How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode

*Restart the computer.
*as soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
*Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
*press Enter.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files, and delete them (if they are present):

FILES

C:\WINDOWS\System32\p3.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\sol.exe

Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE

Finally,RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everytjhing looks now.

Regards,

Trevuren

Hi Trevuren,
Here is new HJT log, after doing fixes. The Sol.exe was for solitare left open on last scan. So I did not need to look at that. What is that 3p.exe? Do you know? And how do you think it wormed its way in? There seems to be so many ways to develop problems once you choose to go surfing or anything on line, that it almost makes us all masocistic. Anyways when I check, sent & recieved you have reversed the trend. I'm now reciveving more and sending less. As far as Findfast, etc. and getting rid of Norton I guess system will preform better. So many thanks for you expert help, and I'm sure you will become a trusted adviser soon.
This site really offers guys like me with limited knowledge and time, a tremendous amount of support. I am sure I speak for all when I say well done, and keep up the good work. :tazz:

Hi billyd,

First, thank you for your kind words. So many victims don't bother to even tell us that their systems are OK after we have helped them clean up their systems.

Now for your questions:

1)File C:\WINDOWS\system32\p3.exe infected by "Backdoor.Win32.Rbot.gen" Virus A lot of our research is done item by item through Google but you have to be careful because of case-sensitivity, punctuation etc....

2) How do they get in: Out of date AV, no firewall... any of this ring a bell.

Now for the good news:

Congratulations, your log is clean!

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? (My Favorite)

Regards,

Trevuren
