Hi there, I am also having trouble getting access to my docs. files, control panel etc.
Dr Watson has really annoyed me!

I've completed all the fixing requirements suggested except for Trend House Call as it does not support my current web browser (Mozilla/Netscape) & need more info about windows update - I am not fullly sure on what to do with this section..

By the way, scince downloading & installing all requested programs, I've lost most of Norton's Internet Security Rights to configure settings - All settings have been disabled , including Firewall.

Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked.
Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"

For anyone using Windows XP, 'Search' will not automatically show hidden files even if your folder options settings are set to do that. Do this so you can see hidden files and folders - click here http://www.davehigha...ds/xphidden.zip to download xphidden.zip. Extract xphidden.reg from the zip file and save it to the desktop. When done, double-click the xphidden.reg and when asked to merge say yes.

Here's the fix:

Important Step
1. Go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok
Scroll down and find the service called:

Network Security Service (NSS)

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows. If you don´t find this service listed go ahead with the next steps.

2. Reboot into SafeMode.[/url <---MAKE SURE YOU KNOW HOW TO DO THIS!!

3. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete once => Click Task Manager => Click the Processes tab => Double-click the Image Name column header to alphabetically sort the processes => Scroll through the list and look for:

winjl.exe
sdksu32.exe

If you find the files, click on them, and then click End Process => Exit the Task Manager.


4. CLOSE ALL WINDOWS AND BROWSERS Scan with Hijack This and put checks next to all the following, then click "Fix Checked"

7. Scan with AdAware and let it remove any bad files found.

8. Clean out temporary and TIF files. Go to Start > Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure these 3 are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

9. Double click on the cwsserviceremove and when asked to merge say yes.

10. Run CW-Shredder - Hit the FIX button - let it run and fix what it finds.

11. Reboot into normal mode.

12. Download the Hoster from here http://members.aol.c.../start_corp.asp
Make sure you check "AutoClean"

then reboot and post a fresh Hijack This log to see how we did.

I've lost all privilidges to configure settings with Norton Antivirus 2004, Icluding Firewall.
Is this because I've downloaded AVG Anti-Virus? If so, How Can I restore them back?

Please post a fresh Hijack This log, there might be something in there that will determine what is causing it. I've never heard of AVG affecting Norton like that before

Next, I would recommend uninstalling Norton completely make sure you follow the instructions at http://service1.syma...nis&svy=&csm=no
I am assuming that you are running Norton Internet security 2004, if this is incorrect please go to support then choose the correct version. next type in removing norton Security works.

It is not a good Idea to have two antivirus programs running on the same computer at the same time as they can read false positives out of each others virus vaults.

If you are only wantin Norton for the Friewall then I would suggest using just a firewall program such as Kerio which can be found at http://www.kerio.com/kerio.html there is a free version there that works very well.

I am really glad my system is finally cleaned up!! Thank-you very much. (I can now now get access to personal files)

I am now having trouble deleting Norton from Program Files - Every time I click delete, a window comes up saying:

Error deleting File or folder

cannot delete NAVAPSVC.EXE Access is denied.

Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected

File is not currnetly in use.



I've deleted Norton from registry keys & control panel as well (add & remove programs) By the way, the link that you posted to me to get rid of Norton - could not get access to it!!

I also wanted to ask you that every time I start my PC, It roughly takes about between 20 -25 seconds before the windows task bar & destop icons appear on the screen!! in reference to your norton question post a fresh Hijack this log, and i will see what there is that needs to be removed. some of those files need to be removed in safemode.

kerio has slowed down your desktop, that is normal. it is checking and making sure there are no programs trying to connect outside of your computer without your knowledge. in my personal opinion 20-25 seconds is acceptable for a good sense of security.

Hi,

I can't get access to KPF now!

A window comes up saying Kerio Personal Firewall has encountered a problem & needs to close! What seems to be the problem?

Scince you're only suppose to run 1 Firewall, Do I get rid of Windows Firewall & just have KPF on, once it's properly running?

Windows should have automatically shut down its own firewall service once Kerio was installed, i am thinking that the problem is from Norton.

please do the following.

Go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok
Scroll down and find all the services with:

symantec or norton

repeat for all files you find
When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows. If you don´t find this service listed go ahead with the next steps.

Please look over the Following Entries I have listed, run Hijack This again and check them and then, making sure you have No Internet Explorer Windows open, including this one, Press the "Fix Checked" Button with HijackThis.

Reboot If I have specified below, and Post a Fresh HijackThis log.
