Hi. I am having a vaguely familiar problem, seems like I've encountered this ages ago on another computer. I have Win XP and updates automatically, two anti spyware programs running, Macafee, and recently bought and ran Registry Mechanic.

After I perform a general search in yahoo or google and get to the search results window I am then unable to go further. After clicking on one of the results my systems hangs, I get the time symbol. Sometimes after waiting, when I try to close the window, the whole IE shuts down and I have to start it up again and again.

Needless to say this is no fun. I have no problem navigating in other ways on the Internet.

Please help.

In case this is appropriate: Thanks in advance for helping me figure this out. I hardly use my computer for anything BUT searching.

Click start then run, type sfc /scannow then press enter to replace the system files, you need the XP CD.

Windows File Protection will show an on screen blue progress bar which will simply disappear when the scan is complete, reboot when it does

System File Checker gives an administrator the ability to scan all protected files to verify their versions. If System File Checker discovers that a protected file has been overwritten, it retrieves the correct version of the file from the cache folder %Systemroot%\System32\Dllcache or the Windows installation source files, and then replaces the incorrect file.

System File Checker also checks and repopulates the cache folder. You must be logged on as an administrator or as a member of the Administrators group to run System File Checker.

The System File Check is only concerned with replacing missing or corrupt system files, and does not affect installed software or data

If you do not have an XP CD then you can borrow a same version as was originally installed XP CD, if you downloaded SP2 then you need an SP1 XP CD

Thank you. I am hoping I can just put my emachines CD in and it will find XP?

(I am revealing my complete lack of knowlege...)

Run it without a CD in, it will ask for a CD if it needs anything, insert the CD you have, it will tell you if it is incorrect

Ran the scan and it was fine, so I rebooted.

Now I can't log on to the internet. It just hangs forever. Tech support at my IP says the settings are fine, so it must be IE. IE is now not showing on the list of installed software.

You can use this guide to repair XP

Possibly, you will need to boot the PC and keep tapping the delete key until the PC enters set up. Change the boot order to CD ROM Drive then hard drive, press F10 then press enter, load the XP CD then type Y then press enter, as it reboots, look for press any key to load from CD, press enter

You will need the computer’s product key to complete this
