I have had a quick look at your download - it certainly appears to be vastly different from anything i recognise - tho I would need to do a lot of checking, to be sure just what the diffs were.

No sure where this leaves me - I am uneasy about just deleting my files, & substituting yours - I have a horrid feeling this may just open up another can of worms.

So, to be on the safe side, I will keep your downloaded archive, but not do anything with it unless I get (preferable, idiot-proof) instructions what to do next.

But, sure, yes, there seem to be big diffs. I wonder why?

Are you sure both of you have the same version?

It would not screw up your computer more than it already is, but I seriously doubt this would fix your problem anyway.


It seems that the Java crew are aware of this problem, and so far, have no solution for it:

We may be fighting a losing battle, but if you want to give it one more shot, I think our first task is to completely remove Java from your system. And then successfully install the latest version. Another opition is to install an older version of Java. Using an older version may be your solution.

Follow the instructions at this site. If it doesn't work, remove it again, but this time try installing an older version of Java. Go back to the main website after installing the older version and verify it. It should work, but complain that it is out of date. Ignore that. As long as it works, I'm sure you'll be happy, even if it is "out of date".

If it still doesn't work, we will have to manually be more thorough with our removal of Java and then try again.

Ok we do have the same version of Java, and a full uninstillation, I think, would be the best option. But one question why does mine work perfectly in all three browsers.

There are so many variables that could affect the functionality of Java, or any other program for that matter. Your computer, CJIS, is apparently completely compatable with JAVA and has all of it's requirements.

At the same time, there could be other programs (not just malware) that can affect the functionality of other programs, whether on purpose or not.

Since this issue is common (due to that help information at JAVA's website), it is most likely bugs in the latest JAVA program. No doubt it is a compatability bug, since it works on your computer and not sweetdaves's. This kind of bug is the hardest to solve and may not be solvable by us. Which is why one of my suggestions was to install an older version, one where they have gotten the bugs worked out already.

If it still doesn't work, a COMPLETE removal of JAVA may be in order. If still not...then there must be a program interfering with JAVA.

That's done it!!!!! Thanks, guys - sorry to have been such a pain in the **** for so long.

I had uninstalled/reinstalled lots of times, in the past, but presumably, each time with the latest version, and that was where the problem lay.

Two points -

1) I guess I had better stick with this version of Java from now on - or, should I at some stage, upgrade? How would I know that the problem had been fixed?

2) I will surely 'consider a donation' - but don't use PayPal, and don't really want to use it just for a one-off. Is there any other way (credit card, or whatever)?

P.S. - as part of the clearing-out process, yesterday - I did a 'Search' on the system for any file with a 'j' in it (19547 files & folders!) - and went through it, deleting anything that looked 'Java-ish'. Sorting by Type, the bulk were .jpg files, so I could skip all those - so it wasn't as bad as it sounds. Shame 'Search' doesn't let you 'Search within results' or some such.

Wonderful! I'm glad it we finally got it!

As for updating...if I were you, I'd stick with that old one until i NEEDED to update . But if you want to upgrade, wait until it is version 1.6 before you upgrade. Hopefully that one won't have kinks.

As for donation, there's no other direct method that I can think of. But what you could do is find a friend of yours that uses Paypal and give him the money that you want to donate and then have him send it via Paypal. That's the easiest (and most secure) thing I can think of.
