1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type msconfig, and then click OK.
3. On the General tab, click Selective startup.
4. Click to clear all the check boxes under Selective startup.
5. Click to select the Process System.ini file check box.
6. Click to select the Process Win.ini file check box.
7. Click OK.
8. When you are prompted to restart your computer, click OK.
Please uncheck the system.ini file 1st then restart if no change untick the Win.ini file and restart

The results in order :

1] select the Process System.ini file check box and select the Process Win.ini file check box

Booted up ok but on trying to load game [ to see what would happen ] it blue screened pretty much straightaway then on pressing Enter to try to continue it went back to desk top.


2] Please uncheck the system.ini file 1st then restart

It booted up but with screen settings/resolution changed, so icons were large and screensaver lost most of its appearance quality [ similar to safe mode appearance ]

3] if no change untick the Win.ini file and restart

Same result as above, and could`nt load game because of the resolution change.
Will try again but will reset resolution after its all booted up and will report back on results [ cos I did`nt think to do that before, doh ! ].

Edited to add :

Tried resetting the resolution after doing steps 2 and 3 again but could`nt do it - to change it I had to reboot after selecting my usual resolution but on reboot it responded to the changed msconfig settings so it just rebooted to the low resolution anyway - did`nt occur to me that the changed msconfig would just over ride me trying to change resolution when a re-start is required to do it

Result of that one was Norton not loading without its particular elements from the start-up and when trying to load game [ to see what would happen ], the very first frame of the game load came up but then went back to desk top.
Solitaire still worked though

Is it worth me doing that load again but saying no to all but one at a time [ of the vxd list ], to see what happens each time ?

I had a feeling you would say that

I have done all the one by one loads, and am now doing combinations [ a bit laborious but hopefully worth it ]. So far I have had some successful game loads and continued game play with some loads, and others where it would`nt load at all [ presumably needing the ones not loaded at the time ], but I`ll report back when I`ve done as many combinations as may be useful, especially if/when I get the blue screen error again as it will hopefully point to the actual problem behind it but there have been none so far with the one-vxd-at-a-time on the occasions that the game has actually loaded.
I have to admit I have been a bit delayed, time wise, by actually enjoying the game for a while just cos of it actually working properly a few times

But I will crack on later and post with a full report on how the testing has gone

Just load 1 then the next then the next that should be the only combo we need you should not have to go 1 & 2 then 1 & 3 1 & 4 etc.

Can you start the computer in normal mode so we get the errors then
Can you go to Dos and change back to the C:>
C:\windows>cd .. enter
C:>attrib - h -s -r *.txt enter
when you do this then go to wordpad go open chance to C down the bottom choose all files
then open bootlog.txt save the file and post.
If I have not given enough detail then let me know.

Hi Peterm, not sure what you mean - I`m not too bright with DOS

Meanwhle, I`m still plugging away with individual loading and so far, SYMTDI.VXD is looking to be a likely possible culprit but I`ll report back fully later on. I`m going to try reloading a game without that vxd loaded and if it instals and then plays ok I will then try a normal boot to see what happens.

Quickie update, I did install a different game and it was fine without symtdi.vxd loaded then I got the usual blue screen error on a normal boot-up but was ok again on a retry without the symtdi loaded - its definately looking the favourite so far !

Ok you do not need to know DOS thats my worry
all you have to do is go to the dos prompt and typein what I have in blue, what is in red is what you do.

What say we uninstall nortons and give it a run ? You can either not hook to the internet while trying or you can click on the E trust anti virus link in my sig and download that for a free year trail

Apologies for disappearing, I have had virtually no net time lately !!

I am at a loss re the dos thing, please could you re-explain in the most basic step by step terms, including how to get to whichever screen I need to use for typing anything in

I`m not too keen on taking Norton out as I can`t find the original disc yet [ moved house a while back and still finding where I have put things ]

On the games front, no blue screening each time I have booted up without saying yes to symtidi however games are now just crashing back to desk top after having played perfectly until the last few days. I have ninstalled and reinstalled them but that has`nt helped to stop the crashing. I feel like I`m back to square one and have a strong urge to utilise my large rubber mallet as a `fix` tool fo my wretched pc
