When I shutdown windows, I am suddenly getting a notice that some file along the lines of CICERO UI Wnd Frame has failed to shut down, so Windows asks whether I would like to end the task or not. I found this suspicious and can find little mention of it from other sources, so I came here to see if it was anything affecting my system. Adaware and Spybot have come up with nothing. I've had performance issues with Ewido in the past, so that would be my last option. Here is a HJT log. Thanks in advance!

Edit: It appears after a reset this error mysteriously no long appears, though I would still appreciate a quick lookover of the HJT log to see if anything looks fishy. Thanks again!

Hi Cowman109,

First question I need to ask is - what are you using as your real-time Antivirus protection?
I ask this because looking at your log, I see you have Norton Anitvirus but it’s currently not running.

Before starting any cleaning steps, please temporarily disable the Microsoft Anti-Spyware real-time protection:
  • Right-click on the Microsoft Anti-Spyware tray icon by your clock (it's the one with the red and yellow bulls-eye).
  • Click on "Security Agents Status".
  • Click on "Disable real-time protection".
Next, open Microsoft Anti-Spyware.
  • Click on the Options menu, then Settings.
  • Select "Real Time Protection" from the left column.
  • Uncheck "Enable (MSAS) Security Agents" and "Enable real-time spyware threat protection".
  • Click the Save button.
Finally, Right-click on the MSAS tray icon, select "Shutdown Microsoft Antispyware", and click "Yes" in the dialog that comes up.

You can re-enable it once your system is clean.

Download Brute Force Uninstaller .
Unzip it to it’s own folder (C:\BFU)

RIGHT-CLICK HERE and choose "Save As" (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download Alcra Remover. Save it in the folder you made earlier (C:\BFU).

Open My Computer and navigate to the c:\BFU folder. Start the Brute Force Uninstaller by doubleclicking BFU.exe

In the scriptline to execute field copy and paste c:\bfu\alcanshorty.bfu
Press execute and let it do it’s job.

Wait for the complete script execution box to pop up and press OK.
Press exit to terminate the BFU program.

There’s a file on your system that is most likely “bad” however, I’d like to have that confirmed rather than just deleting it.
Please go to http://virusscan.jotti.org , click on Browse, and upload the following file for analysis:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\uomu\uomum.exe

Then click Submit. Allow the file to be scanned, and then please copy and paste the results into a Microsoft Word document or Notepad and save it with a name you’ll remember.

Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
When the program is finished, a small window will pop up saying Done Cleaning, click OK

If you use Firefox browser
1) Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
2) Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
1) Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
2) Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Run a free online scan with Kaspersky AntiVirus.
Go to http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner and click the "Kaspersky Online Scanner" button (NOT "Kaspersky File Scanner").
  • In the new window that opens, click the "Accept" button to accept the user agreement, install the ActiveX control, and download the program.
  • When you get the Windows dialog asking if you want to install this software, click the "Install" button.
  • When the "Update progress" line changes to "Ready" and the "NEXT ->" button lights up with a green arrow, click it.
  • Click on the "Scan Settings" button, and in the next window select the "extended" database, and click Ok.
  • Under "Please select a target to scan:", click My Computer to start the scan.
When the scan is finished, click the "Save as Text" button, and save the file as kavscan.txt to your Desktop, close the Kaspersky On-line Scanner window.

Reboot your PC

Post a new HijackThis log, the contents of kavscan.txt file, and the results from Jotti regarding the questionable file.

Let us know if any problems persist.

First question I need to ask is - what are you using as your real-time Antivirus protection?
I ask this because looking at your log, I see you have Norton Anitvirus but it’s currently not running.

Not too long ago my Norton subscription ended and I have not had another running yet (I suppose that's a problem!)

As for that file, the jotti scan did not detect the .exe file. It found two odd files, however, called uomum.lck and uomua.lck. Trying to put those through the jotti scan gave an error along the lines of it not liking my firewall very much. If there is still a file I should scan, though, I could hunt around for the port that needs to be opened for that and try again.

Also, when I restarted my computer after doing all this, when Windows started up it told me the system had recovered from a serious error, blah blah blah, and apparently the files that were having trouble were:

C:\DOCUME~1\Alan\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER0832.dir00\Mini022006-04.dmp
C:\DOCUME~1\Alan\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER0832.dir00\sysdata.xml

I somehow recall having trouble with these in the past as well.

And here are the logs.

Hi Cowman109,

I apologize for not responding sooner. The last couple of days have been kind of crazy for me. All my future responses will be quicker.

As far as AntiVirus Software, I suggest you download one of these Free AntiVirus programs:
AVG
Avast Antivirus
Anti-Vir

NOTE: DO NOT install more than one antivirus program. They will conflict, and provide less protection, not more.

Uninstall Norton through Add/Remove Programs (let me know if you have a problem)
Then install the AntiVirus program you selected above.

I need you to check to see if a couple of programs work.
Try opening Task Manager by hitting Ctrl-Alt-Delete
Try opening Regedit by clicking Start>Run> type in regedit and click OK.
If they do open, you can just close them. Let me know either way.

As far as the error at start up you mentioned – Is that something that is happening everytime you reboot or just that once. Researching the files you mentioned suggests that those 2 files are created for debugging purposes.
A couple reasons I saw that could cause that error at start up are:
After a hard shut down or a problem with your video drivers.

In Windows Explorer, go to C:\Program Files\Common Files\uomu\uomum.exe
Right click uomum.exe and select properties. Click the version tab and tell me any info listed.
(Under Item Name, you may have to click on Company, Version, etc… to get more info in the Value box)

Also, I just wanted to make sure you installed the TightVNC remote control software package. TightVNC is a legitimate program, but I just want to double check to you installed/use it.

When you ran the Brute Force Uninstaller, did you have any problems? Did you disable Microsoft Anti-Spyware beforehand?

Let me know about the things I asked and we’ll continue on from there.

I possibly deleted Norton in the past because the only remnants I could find were two miscellaneous symantic update files in the add/remove program list. I removed those as well, and once I restart my computer (and once you ask for it) I'll give you a HJT log.

Task Manager runs fine, but when I attempt to open regedit, I get the following error:
Posted Image

And as for the startup error, it was a one-time error apparently and has not been a problem again.

Looking through the uomu folder, I still find no .exe file as you shall see here (I got picture happy it seems)
Posted Image

Yes, I installed and use WinVNC. Forgot to mention that earlier

Brute force installer, from my understanding, worked just fine. I recieved a notice saying the script was completed I believe, though it completely just about instantly. Not sure if that's supposed to take a long time or not. If it is supposed to take a long time, I probably did something wrong.

And no worries about taking a while. Real life comes first. :whistling:

Hi again Cowman109,

Hopefully at this point you installed one of the free AntiVirus Programs I suggested. Not having updated real-time antivirus protection is a major security risk - making your system/data extremely vulnerable.

For some reason, the initial instructions I gave you for the Brute Force Uninstaller (with the alcanshorty.bfu) did not remove the Alcra related files. The script looks as though it was executed, but wasn’t (Not your fault).
That’s why your getting the regedit error and there’s a file in your HijackThis log that should have been deleted and wasn’t.

Through some trial and error on my own system this is how I got it to work sucessfully:

Open the Brute Force Uninstaller
To the right of the Scriptfile to execute box, click the yellow folder
In the Open BFU script window, make sure next to look in: it says BFU - if not use the drop down arrow to navigate to C:BFU
Click on alcanshorty.bfu and then click Open
Now press Execute

You should notice a blue progress bar and when it’s finished you'll see a completed script execution box.
Click OK

Now try opening regedit by clicking Start>Run> type in regedit and click OK.
If it opens, just close it. Let me know either way.

I know you mentioned you were hesitant to run ewido – but I’m going to ask you to run it. I think it will detect the questionable uomu folder and it’s contents.

First, you have the older version ewido that needs to be uninstalled.
In Control Panel, Go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall ewido security suite

Download, install, and update the NEW free version of ewido anti-malware:
1) When installing, under "Additional Options" **UNCHECK** "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu ".
2) When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
3) From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
4) After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed successfully – close Ewido
Note: At this point we are not running a scan – only updating the definition files.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
http://www.pchell.co.../safemode.shtml

Open ewido anti-malware
  • Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run.
  • If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. Select "clean" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and "Create encrypted backup" before clicking on OK.
  • When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again.

Restart your computer, not in Safe Mode.

Post a new HijackThis log and the Ewido log in your next response.

Brute Force Uninstaller worked properly I believe, taking a good 30 seconds to finish with the progress bar and everything.

Regedit works now!

Ewido encountered the same problem as before - it discovered about sixteen thousand errors - 99.9% of them were apparently deleted temp files? I'll give you a few samples of the thousand and then look into any that are not these temp files...

:mozilla.173:C:\RECYCLER\NPROTECT\00475346.MOZ -> TrackingCookie.Adrevolver : Cleaned without backup

:mozilla.142:C:\RECYCLER\NPROTECT\00475348.MOZ -> TrackingCookie.Zedo : Cleaned without backup

Basically multiply that by two hundred or so. I cleaned without backup because I believe the masses of backup files were what crashed Ewido in the past.

I'll sift through the other files after this post and edit this post with what I find.

EDIT: It appears simply a few more cookies were found. I did a search and Windows found no word uomom or uomod or even a word with uo in it.

Also, when I started my computer, before I could fully log in and take a screenshot of the error, some file apparently had some of strange error along the name of vccleanup.exe in a temp folder if I recall correctly.

Hi Cowman109,

Please run HijackThis and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries:
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [uomu] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\uomu\uomum.exe

Close all browser and other windows except for HijackThis, and click "Fix Checked".

Delete the following folders (if they still exist):
C:\Program Files\Common Files\uomu

Delete the following files (if they still exist):
C:\113_dollarrevenue_4_0_3_9.exe

Reboot and post a new HijackThis Log

Seems the Norton “leftovers” are causing some problems. Such as that error regarding vccleanup.exe, many files in the Norton Protected Recycle Bin, and some left over quarantined files

I need to know the specific version of Norton you had. (for example: Norton AntiVirus 2004 or Norton SystemWorks 2005, etc)

I'm pretty sure that it was Norton Antivirus 2004, though not 100% sure. I don't believe I have the CD with me either. Is there any way to determine what version I had, perhaps through a regedit key, or would that be long gone with the uninstall?

Your HijackThis Log looks good.

I’m not really sure how to tell which version you had since most of it’s gone.
Here’s a link from Symantec to remove Norton 2004/2005/2006 using their uninstall tool.

Note: The link below needs to be run from Internet Explorer (Not FireFox). If you're using Firefox right now, copy/paste the link to Internet Explorer.

http://service1.syma...005033108162039

After you run the uninstall tool:
Do a Search for Norton and then Symantec – See if anything’s left
Tell me what tabs your Recycle bin has by right-clicking it and selecting properties (for example global, local disk(c:))
Create a test document, save it, then delete it – See if it shows up in the Recycle Bin
See if C:\RECYCLER\NPROTECT still exists

Let me know if you have any problems

For some reason the website did not recognize that I had downloaded the ActiveX controls, so instead I went to the link to manually delete it by downloading the .bat, .exe, and .reg file. I followed the steps it asked for and (hopefully) removed all remnants of Norton.

The tabs under Recycler are Global, C, and D. However, there is no C:Recycler folder (nor was there one visible before this), meaning I can also find no Nprotect folder. I will run another Ewido scan overnight to see if it still detects anything.

Good call on running those Symantec files manually.

C:\RECYCLER is a hidden folder (Sorry about that)

Enable viewing of hidden files by doing the following:
1) Go to My Computer, and click on the "Tools" menu
2) Click "Folder options"
3) Select the "View" tab
4) Make sure "Show hidden files and folders" is selected
5) Make sure "Hide extensions for known file types" is unchecked
6) Make sure "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" is unchecked

Also, as a test, Delete the C:\BFU folder you created earlier (you don't need it anymore)
Double click the Recycle Bin on your desktop and make sure C:\BFU is there.

Interesting. I have discovered two folders inside of C:Recycler. One is of course NPROTECT which contains older files that I had deleted before the norton cleanup, and then we have a folder with a painfully long string of digits that looks like a registry key. It reads S-1-5-21-606747145-688789844-854245398-1003. Inside this folder is the bfu folder.

After I emptied my recycling bin, I checked the NPROTECT folder and sorted it by date of modified files. It seems no file is there past April 19th. However, it seems files in that folder go as far back as July 2004, which is quite strange as Ewido did not delete them.

This likely means that no files are being put into the NPROTECT folder anymore but the folder still exists. Should I delete the NPROTECT folder?

The S-1-5-21-………-1003 folder inside C:\Recycler is normal and the fact that the BFU folder is in there means it’s working properly. If you had multiple user accounts, you’d typically see a S-1-5-21…… folder for each user account, ending in 1004, 1005, etc.

Go ahead and try deleting the NPROTECT folder. Hopefully it goes peacefully, if not let me know.

Reboot and make sure it wasn’t recreated.

Have you received any errors recently?

I deleted the folder, rebooted, and ironically recieved the same error that I did in the original post concerning CICERO UI Wnd Frame. However, when I restarted my computer a second time, I did not get the error again.

So, other than that, everything appears to be good with the NPROTECT folder finally gone. Thanks!
