Desktop and Taskbar Gone

My laptop's desktop icons and taskbar have vanished into the ether. Right click in the desktop is disabled, and when I use ctrl+alt+dlt new task to run explorer.exe, my taskbar flashes into existence for a brief moment, before returning from whence it came. explorer.exe is not a running process, and as mentioned above, efforts to manually start it are futile.

by chance have you installed a program called friend greeting.
or friend greeting cards?
Go here and on the left hand side click on taskbar missing
