My subscription for McAfee and Norton is gonna end soon and I was wondering if there was anything I can do to get protection for free. I have Ewido, will that protect me without me having Norton and McAfee?

Your Best bet is to go for AVG Antivirus - It is free and better than big name antivirus products.

If you would like to pay for something of higher quality, try:
ZoneAlarm Anti-Virus
PC-Cillin

Also, it is not reccomended to run 2 Anti-Virus products as the two programs will get into conflict and will let malware/viruses to "slip through the cracks"

If you want higher quality, go for nod32 or kapersky.

As for running 2 antivirus products at once....well, that needs some clarification. The conflict they cause does not let things slip through the cracks, it plays hacov with your system and greatly slows it down.

But, there is nothing wrong with having two antivirus programs on your PC if only 1 is present in memory. Not all antivirus programs have a memory resident componant and it is not a bad idea to have two with one always running and the other as a back up for monthly checks

AVG Free

You might also think about Avast!...it's free, too, and a very good AV application.

GeekMan's right...only run one AV at a time. It's ok to have more than one on the machine, as long as only one is running at any given time.

Forgive me for adding something very often this board offers members a way of Spring cleaning their computer to regain the original performance as standard, and although it takes some time it is worth it.
I afreaid that my version is poorly wiritten and geekish here:

Important: Please do not do the below while they are looking at your HJT log, but at some later date and time.
.

Time to use your "runbox" to clean your computer,
(all these steps are done with the run box then)

Run Box
find and press the keys; the Windows flag botton and the R botton together(up pops the runbox)
(all these steps can be simply done by typing commands in the run box then)

Step1 deleting the prefetch files
type, or cut/paste this to runbox: prefetch
press: enter
(the prefetch folder opens)
press: Ctrl botton with the A botton(select all is the same)
press: shift + delete botton(deletes with prompt)

Step2 disc clean up
type or cut/paste this to runbox: cleanmgr.exe
choose drive(normally C: but comps differ)
press: enter(this process can take a long time)

Step3 disc defragmenter
type or cut/paste this to runbox: dfrg.msc
press enter(this process can take a long time)

Step4 checkdisk
type, or cut/paste this to runbox: chkdsk /f /r
press: enter( black window appears)
press: Y botton
press: enter
reboot the computer(this process is the longest, worse the screen may be lost before hours later the computer arrives at the welcome screen)

Step5 download: clean up.
cleanup
http://www.stevengou...anup/ysspec.htm
run: cleanup

Step6 Start ups
type, or cut/paste this to runbox: msconfig
press: enter
mousemove to: start ups
keep; antivirus related and wanted entries
check: unknown entries
disable: ones you are sure are unneeded.

Good, although this has taken you a long time, I think your computer will thank you for it, .

I uninstalled AVG because it was messing up my computer, is it ok if I just use Ewido?

Ewido does not protect you against viruses, per se....it may help you from becoming infected, but it is really a complement, rather than replacement
