I downloaded OpenOffice.org last week. My son's school uses it exclusively and though we have all the Microsoft programs at home he was experiencing some problem about transferring his work from home to school, so I downloaded it. He hasn't had to use it yet and is now on holidays so it hasn't been used at all since installation.

Every time I shutdown the computer I get a message saying that "soffice.BIN" is closing down. I did a search for the file/program and found I have no "soffice.BIN" and I have two "soffice.bin" one a program in Program Files and the other a ".cab" file in Documents & Settings .......

Is OpenOffice running continuously in the background? Should it be doing this? Is the discrepancy in the names ie. BIN and bin something to be concerned about?

I would not worry about the name, but I do not think openoffice still has something running in the background all the time (it used to a loooong time ago).

start > run, type
eventvwr.msc
<enter>

Right click application and choose CLEAR ALL EVENTS, do not save the log
Right click system and choose CLEAR ALL EVENTS, do not save the log

Reboot. Work with computer until error recurs. reboot

start > run, type
eventvwr.msc

Look under systems and applications for items with red Xs that happened at the SAME time as your problem...list them here.

forget that...saw your hijack log...there is an open office quickstart which does indeed run at start up and all the time.

It's purpose is to increase the speed of loading office. You do not need it. If you do not mind waiting an extra 10 or seconds when you rarely use it, I would kill it using hijackthis by selecting the entry in the global startup section and hitting fix
