If I was running an IT department and my job depended on NOT getting infected with a virus, I would buy

kapersky

or Nod32
http://www.nod32.com/

If I was talking about a home system, I would get avg or avast (free) which offers good enough protection for most users

I'll second that. But I'd say Avast was the better of the two (indeed I use it myself and it's never let me down). AVG can be somewhat frustrating to update (server often unavailable or very slow).
