We have been working on putting some budget shopping lists together i this is our $500 system it might suit you and would be better than the system you put together there.
Thanks go to Gerry he put this config together and we all think its a good deal, only big difference between what you put together and this is the CPU is faster and it has less ram and a CD/DVD drive.

CD/DVD Burners (RW Drives)
SAMSUNG 16X DVD±R DVD Burner Beige ATA/ATAPI Model SH-W162Z / BEWN
$35.99

ATX Computer Cases
APEX PC-115 Beige Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 350W Power Supply
$24.99

Internal Hard Drives

Western Digital Caviar WD400BB 40GB 7200 RPM IDE Ultra ATA100 Hard Drive - OEM
$42.00

You might want to change the drive larger or even smaller its up to you and how much space you think she might need.

Monitors - CRT
SONY CPD-G220S White 17" CRT Monitor D-Sub - Retail
Model #: CPD-G220S
$99.99

A 17 inch sony trinitron monitor--get 'em while they are still around. Flat screen CRT, crisp colors, bright.

AMD-compatible Motherboards
BIOSTAR TForce6100 Socket 754 NVIDIA GeForce 6100 Micro ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail
$64.25

This particular board has integrated video, audio, lan, as expected. A full complement of usb, and support for RAID. Not too shabby. It's a small atx, though, with only two pci slots and one pci express x1 and 1 pci express x16. Only two DDR slots though.

Speakers
Logitech S-100 5 watts RMS 2.0 Speaker - OEM
$7.00

Fans

MASSCOOL FD08025S1M4 80mm Sleeve Case Cooling Fan - Retail
