printing problems in Word 2002

I've been having some problems printing a couple of large documents in word 2002 (running on an XP machine). Interestingly both documents use linked fields pointing to numbered tables and graphs.
Although I've resolved the issue by removing the problem fields and re-typing them in manually, it has caused some frustration.
Has this happened to anyone else? Does anyone know why this would be happening?
When I attempt to print these documents I get the error "Word has encountered a problem and needs to shut down".
