i need to insall windows 98 on an old dell laptop so that i can upgrade to XP. when i try to format the drive it says that there is something missing from 98 and it wont work. i need to find files to make a windows 98 boot disk. then i need to install it. does anyone know wher ethoes files are? and how do i install it after i have the boot disk in?

Did you boot the PC to command prompt only then type format c: and press enter

if you have the upgrade versoin of XP then you don't need to install 98 first....you just put the xp cd in...got through the format and setup routine as normal...then it will ask for the 98 disk as proof tha tyou own the other OS...you put the disk in...it reads it...tells you to take it out and you're on your way...no need to FULLY install 98 j ust to remove it later in the process
