I followed the instructions in this post:
http://www.geekstogo...er_A-t8925.html

Step 6 required me to visit TrendMicro for a Housecall. TrendMicro (irony or ironies!) only runs on IE. However, when I try to open IE, there is no response.

Similary, when I launch Yahoo chat and select a correspondent, I am unable to chat with them (basically, it freezes). Previously, one of the most irritating symptoms of my malware infection was that everytime I initiated a Yahoo chat, or someone initiated one with me, IE would launch (to about:blank) and spawn 2 to 5 popups about Spyware. So my uneducated assumption is that the malware is no longer capable of doing *that*, but it's also preventing IE from launching at all.

Maybe the next step is to reinstall IE (I regularly use Firefox, which is running as well as ever, which is to say quite slowly). But I'd appreciate any directions first.

Copied below are the AboutBuster log produced as I followed the instructions above and a HikackThis log.

A suplement: The instructions I followed asked to a note on any complications.

So: When I shut down the computer it regulary pops up a window stating that
- CCapp
- ServerWnd
are being closed, with a progress bar. (I'm guessing at the wording, since my OS is in German. It says, I think, "Ein Program wird beendet."

After following the intructions, upon shuting down to reboot, I got a new pop up that "SysFader" wird beendet. Then it would say that it wasn't responding and ask me to choose between close immediately and cancel. Three times I choose close immediately and it repeated the cycle. As far as I know, I've never seen SysFader before at shut down.

And another thing:

I just ran SpySweeper and it (still) found:
- Cool Web Search
- CWS-AboutBlank
- CWS_NS3 Hijacker (Which I've NEVER seen before!!!)
- Spooner-A

And just to reiterate, Yahoo IM now doesn't work. I can log on and see my list of correspondents. But if I click on one to chat, everything freezes and I have to use Task Manager to shut down Yahoo.

Hi wdf2

Welcome to geekstogo ;)

Please read through the instructions before you start (you may want to print this out).

Please download and install these programs - don't run them yet!!

Please download and unzip
About:Buster to a folder. Inside the folder is a readme file that has instructions on the use of the program.
AboutBuster MUST be updated before you use it.
Start AboutBuster, click the update button, check for update, drag the box to the side and hit download updates, close the box . Don't run it yet.

Please download and install AD-Aware.
Check Here on how setup and use it - please make sure you update it first.

Download and unzip cwsserviceremove to your desktop. use either link below:
cwsserviceremove
cwsserviceremove.zip

Download CW-Shredder at the link below:
CWSshtreder.exe

Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked.
Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"

For anyone using Windows XP, 'Search' will not automatically show hidden files even if your folder options settings are set to do that. Do this so you can see hidden files and folders - Click here to download xphidden.zip. Extract xphidden.reg from the zip file and save it to the desktop. When done, double-click the xphidden.reg and when asked to merge say yes.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Here's the fix:

Important Step
1. Go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok
Scroll down and find the service called:

Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper ( 6Q_'8) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\sysgc.exe

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows. If you dont find this service listed go ahead with the next steps.

2. Reboot into Safe Mode: Click here if you don't know how to do this.

3. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete once -> Click Task Manager -> Click the Processes tab -> Double-click the Image Name column header to alphabetically sort the processes -> Scroll through the list and look for:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\iikgg.dll
C:\DOKUME~1\Walters\LOKALE~1\Temp\se.dll

If you find the files, click on them, and then click End Process -> Exit the Task Manager.

4. CLOSE ALL WINDOWS AND BROWSERS Scan with HijackThis and put checks next to all the following, then click "Fix Checked"

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\DOKUME~1\Walters\LOKALE~1\Temp\se.dll/sp.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\DOKUME~1\Walters\LOKALE~1\Temp\se.dll/sp.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7989909A-0B6A-460C-9D6E-11D9B6130B4D} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\iikgg.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sp] rundll32 C:\DOKUME~1\Walters\LOKALE~1\Temp\se.dll,DllInstall
O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://207.188.7.150...RdxIE601_de.cab

5. Using Windows Explorer delete the following files if present:
If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. if it is uncheck it and try again.

C:\WINDOWS\System32\iikgg.dllDelete this file
C:\DOKUME~1\Walters\LOKALE~1\Temp\se.dllDelete all files in your temp folder

(and any other files with the same name that end in .dll, .exe or .dat, you may find them right next to each other, example - appsw.exe, appsw.dll, appsw.dat)

6. Run AboutBuster . This will scan your computer for the bad files and delete them. Save the report (copy and paste into notepad or wordpad and save as a .txt file) and post a copy back here when you are done with all the steps.

7. Scan with AdAware and let it remove any bad files found.

8. Clean out temporary and TIF files. Go to Start > Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure these 3 are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

9. Double click on the cwsserviceremove and when asked to merge say yes.

10. Run CW-Shredder - Hit the FIX button - let it run and fix what it finds.

11. Reboot into normal mode.

12. Download the Hoster from here http://members.aol.c...bee/hoster.zip. Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program.

13. Download and run this online virus scan:
http://housecall.tre.../start_corp.asp
Make sure you check "AutoClean"

Please reboot and post a fresh HijackThis.log to see how we did.

Now my complications during the attempted fix. (I'll insert my comments with WDF2.)

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

WDF2: Not found. It's complicated by the fact that everything is in German. There was one entry called: Remoteprozeduraufruf (RPC) -- so, remote procedure call up. But the file description (which I could see only in the popup window after double clicking on the name) ends in "svchost -k rpcss" rather than in "sysgc.exe." There is also another service that mentions RPC in the description, but it ends in "Isass.exe"

WDF2: Not found. Indeed, Task Manager did not list files in this way at all. It rather had names only, like:
taskmgr.ext
suchost.exe
Isass.exe,
etc.

If you find the files, click on them, and then click End Process -> Exit the Task Manager.

4. CLOSE ALL WINDOWS AND BROWSERS Scan with HijackThis and put checks next to all the following, then click "Fix Checked"

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\DOKUME~1\Walters\LOKALE~1\Temp\se.dll/sp.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\DOKUME~1\Walters\LOKALE~1\Temp\se.dll/sp.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7989909A-0B6A-460C-9D6E-11D9B6130B4D} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\iikgg.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sp] rundll32 C:\DOKUME~1\Walters\LOKALE~1\Temp\se.dll,DllInstall
O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://207.188.7.150...RdxIE601_de.cab

5. Using Windows Explorer delete the following files if present:
If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. if it is uncheck it and try again.

C:\WINDOWS\System32\iikgg.dllDelete this file
WDF2: Not found
C:\DOKUME~1\Walters\LOKALE~1\Temp\se.dllDelete all files in your temp folder
WDF2: Found and deleted

(and any other files with the same name that end in .dll, .exe or .dat, you may find them right next to each other, example - appsw.exe, appsw.dll, appsw.dat)
WDF2: I wasn't sure what to do here. Files with *the same name* and other endings -- i.e., the names : "iikgg" and "se"?

6. Run AboutBuster . This will scan your computer for the bad files and delete them. Save the report (copy and paste into notepad or wordpad and save as a .txt file) and post a copy back here when you are done with all the steps.

7. Scan with AdAware and let it remove any bad files found.

WDF2: Here's the fun part. The computer crashed (turned itself off) about 3 to 5 minutes into the AdAware scan. Now: This also happened with AdAware yesterday, and *it has happened EVERY time I've tried to run a full Norton scan for *months.*!!

After the crash, I tried to restart in safe mode, but it wouldn't boot. So I turned it off manually, restarted in normal mode, and ran through the rest of the instructions.

WDF2: Nothing found.

11. Reboot into normal mode.

12. Download the Hoster from here http://members.aol.c...dbee/hoster.zip. Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program.

13. Download and run this online virus scan:
http://housecall.tre.../start_corp.asp
Make sure you check "AutoClean"

WDF2: And dig this: As soon as I start the scan, I get: "IE has encountered an problem and must be closed." I tried it 6 times (before and after the attempted fix) and it happens every time.

Please reboot and post a fresh HijackThis.log to see how we did.

Thanks for the help. I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi wdf2

Please set your system to show all files; Click here for how to do this if you're unsure.

Reboot into Safe Mode: see here if you don't know how to do this.

close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank

Click on Fix Checked and exit HijackThis.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:

C:\DOKUME~1\Walters\LOKALE~1\Temp\se.dll

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

Run AboutBuster run two times = 4 passes

Run CW-Shredder run two times

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic, and let us know how your system's working. ;)

As for how it's doing: Launching Yahoo and initiating a chat caused IE to open with about:blank and spawn popups, as usual.

Cheers,

Hi wdf2

Please set your system to show all files; Click here for how to do this if you're unsure.

Download the ccleaner
I use this Program and is setup like this all boxs are check.

Clean out off temp files in Mozilla, Internet Explorer.
Internet Explorer: Tools/ Internet Options/ General/ Temporary internet files/ Delete Files (NOTE, that this may take very long!). You can also set the memory limit to about 80 MB at the Settings.

Mozilla: Edit/ Options/ Extended/ Cache/ Clear Cache

1. Download the Pocket Killbox.
2. Unzip the contents of KillBox.zip to a convenient location.
3. Double-click on KillBox.exe.
4. Click "Replace on Reboot" and check the "Use Dummy" box.
5. Paste this file into the top "Full Path of File to Delete" box.
C:\DOKUME~1\Walters\LOKALE~1\Temp\se.dll,DllInstall
6. Click the "Delete File" button which looks like a stop sign.
7. Click "Yes" at the Replace on Reboot prompt.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\DOKUME~1\Walters\LOKALE~1\Temp\se.dll/sp.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\DOKUME~1\Walters\LOKALE~1\Temp\se.dll/sp.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {9AD4417C-4F99-4B39-BF7B-CF4615427969} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\ida.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sp] rundll32 C:\DOKUME~1\Walters\LOKALE~1\Temp\se.dll,DllInstall
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [HD] C:\Programme\HistoryDestroyer 3.1 trial\Hd.cmd

Click on Fix Checked and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode: see here if you don't know how to do this.

Now run killbox again delete the same file: C:\DOKUME~1\Walters\LOKALE~1\Temp\se.dll,DllInstall

C:\DOKUME~1\Walters\LOKALE~1\Temp\se.dll/sp.html

The following are recommended fixes: HijackThis is current; running from a temporary folder, Create a new folder on your C:\ Drive name it like thisC:\HJT\ Now copy the HijackThis in to the new folder. Allways run HJT from it own folder it create backs.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic, and let us know how your system's working
. ;)

Performance: Yahoo launched and initiated a chat without incident. But I just ran SpySweeper, and it returns CWS About;blank and Spooner-A

IE opened without spawning pop ups. So far in 10 minutes no unusual effects.

Hi wdf2

Please run the following free, online virus scans: Please post the logs From both virus scans we will need them to remove previous infections that have left files on your system.
http://housecall.tre.../start_corp.asp
http://www.pandasoft...n_principal.htm

Then restart your computer one more time and post a new HJT log

Hi thatman -

Things looked good last night, but this morning it back to (ab)normal. Actually, there is one positive change: initiating Yahoo chats no longer (for now) spawns IE and popup windows.

I couldn't run either of the online scans you posted. They both require IE, and:
- When I initiate the Housecall scan, I get the notice: IE has encountered a problem and must be shut down.
- When I initiate the Panda scan, the scan popup window is immediately covered by a new About:blank IE page and 3-5 popups. When I clear all of that away, the Panda scan window is gone.

Here is a new HJT log:

Hi wdf2

Here's the fix:

Important Step
1. Go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok
Scroll down and find the service called:

No file to remove

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows. If you dont find this service listed go ahead with the next steps.

2. Reboot into Safe Mode: Click here if you don't know how to do this.

3. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete once -> Click Task Manager -> Click the Processes tab -> Double-click the Image Name column header to alphabetically sort the processes -> Scroll through the list and look for:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\med.dll

C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\se.dll,DllInstall

If you find the files, click on them, and then click End Process -> Exit the Task Manager.

4. CLOSE ALL WINDOWS AND BROWSERS Scan with HijackThis and put checks next to all the following,

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\DOKUME~1\Walters\LOKALE~1\Temp\se.dll/sp.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\DOKUME~1\Walters\LOKALE~1\Temp\se.dll/sp.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {3ABEF278-4D1A-4ECD-BC0E-17CA9BB5DF6F} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\med.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sp] rundll32 C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\se.dll,DllInstall
O16 - DPF: {41F17733-B041-4099-A042-B518BB6A408C} - http://a1540.g.akama...meInstaller.exe
O18 - Filter: text/html - {17223775-FB87-475D-B452-3FE594FA6F38} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\med.dll
O18 - Filter: text/plain - {17223775-FB87-475D-B452-3FE594FA6F38} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\med.dll

Then click on "Fix Checked"

5. Using Windows Explorer delete the following files if present:
If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. if it is uncheck it and try again.

C:\WINDOWS\System32\med.dll

C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\se.dll,DllInstall

Trendmicro dos run in firefox.

Please reboot and post a fresh HijackThis.log to see how we did.
