The problem started with the computer bogging down during automatic Windows updates. The updates would download so far and stop. The computer couldn"t be shut down. Then, Norton Anti-virus couldn't be activated unless online and with an error message. The address bar and Go button no longer function. I tried to do a System Restore and get a message that it could not be completed. Repeated efforts for different dates get the same results. The download issue seems to be resolved now, but the other problems still persist. I've run virus, adware and security scans and checks with nothing showing. Any ideas?

before we start, could you get a clean bill of health from the malware folks?
Please go to the malware forum in my signature and follow the instructions at the top....Especially the CLICK HERE .

That will give you several steps that will help you clean up 70 percent of all problems by yourself. If at the end of the process you are still having difficulty--and you may not be-- then post a hijackthis log in THAT forum.

If you are still having problems after getting a clean bill of health from the malware expert, please return to this thread.
