I don't think I see it there. I see (E:) which is why portable hard drive.. C: which is what got reformated.. D: which is my docuemnts and a volume called PQSERVICE.. No idea what this is but it says EISA Configuration)

What exactly do I look for in the bios? cos I've checked before and it came up with

+Hard Drive
CD-ROM/DVD Drive
Floppy Devices
Network Boot

With the hard drive being the only one I can expand :S

does "PQSERVICE" have a drive letter? does it have an icon that looks like cdrom? is there a cd in the drive currently? (i'm gonna assume that that is your recovery drive as it would have a drive letter if it were a disk drive but..)

yeah you're right.. It was the recovery drive.. has no drive letter.

Should I assume my registry is back to normal now I've reinstalled windows back to factory mode?

well...the upper/lower filters is a common fix for cd issues....and generally doesn't cause the drive to disapear...but since yours was gone before you did the reg fix i doubt it made it worse

Run this

http://www.geekstogo...=download&id=15

The popular CDGONE patch. CD drives may vanish in Windows Explorer, Device Manager, etc. if a third-party CD-burning package has been uninstalled and Registry references for some code modules aren?t removed successfully. This patch and a reboot usually will restore the missing drives. Any third party package still required will then have to be re-installed.

boot into the bios and look for a setting called "quick boot" or "quiet boot" or something to that nature...and turn that off...then see if you can see where it detects the drive during post (if it's not detecting the drive in bios or through post...it's got a good chance of being dead)
