I have just, for the first time ever, attached a microphone to my pc. Its a brand new Dell P4 pc, and the microphone was in some package with it. I put it in the proper slot in the back according to the colour codes, and tried to record in Sound Recorder but no success. The "wave" line didnt even seem to be registering the sound.

Am I doing something wrong or is there another way to test it? I want to use it in messenger among other things.

You probably have to enable the microphone in your sound control panel. Usually, this means just ticking a checkbox next to "microphone". By default, it's normally off.
