Can't download files but can use internet

Hi,
Just got a Dell computer today
I have a Dell wireless usb adapter and a D-link router
I can go on the internet, but when i try to download a file it starts for a bit and then freezes??
I have two other machines which i have had for a while and they don't have this problem
I am using firefox but i have tried with internet explorer but i still have the problem
Any ideas?
