resizing primary partition

anyone know of a FREEWARE program, that works, so i can resize a primary partition without losing data (running XP)

While nothing is guaranteed and you should make sure you have a backup before you attempt to resize a partition, as well as defragmenting the partition, there are some programs available.
Quite some time ago I used the Mandrake install to reduce the size of an XP partition. I would assume that it is still in the current releases, now call Mandriva.
Another program which has the ability to resize partitions is qtparted, which is on the Knoppix Live CD. I have not used it, but it has be told to me that it works by others I trust, but still, use at your own risk.
