Hi guys and thanks for this great service.

When I fire up my computer (Windows 2000) everything is normal until, instead of my desktop, I get the Blue Screen. I can access my files and net through Task Manager but get a window stating "Cannot find file '(null)' or one of its components ect...ect..." This all started when I downloaded Micosoft Updates. A couple of virus sweeps came up clean. Would appreciate any ideas you may have.

Open Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel and tick the box to "Show Updates". Look at the installed updates and see if KB908351 is installed. If it is, remove it and see if your machine will boot properly.

I removed KB908531 (hope that's the one you meant), and re-booted. I'm afraid it didn't make any difference. Any other ideas for me?

What other updates were installed about the time the problem began? Can you list the numbers here for me?

Remove the top three updates one at a time...rebooting after each removal. See if one of those is causing your problem.

Click Start, then Run, type msconfig, and click "Ok".

Under the "Startup" tab, are there any blank entries in the "Startup Item" column?

Without the desk top, I have no access to the Start Button. Is there another way to open the menu?

Under 'Startup Item' there are seven items; all are checkmarked.

In the left pane, expand (click +) HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT

Scroll down to .exe and click on it. In the right pane, under the Data column, what is the value listed for (Default)?
