Ok this is for a buddy of mine, he cannot get online right now cause his computer will not work.

Computer type Hp Desktop 553X
Ram 512
MHZ ?
40 gig HD X2 OS windows Xp pro service pack 1……on one HD and all other data on other one….

He came home from work and his monitor was black with just a mouse cursor. He could move the mouse, but that it……ctr + alt + delete did nothing……so he tried to reboot got the same thing….right after it got to the windows loading screen were you see the process bar showing windows loading, and it starts to load windows, it goes to a black blank screen with just a mouse cursor that you can move but nothing else.

Then he started it in safe mode……we checked the video card, it was working…..checked HDs they were working….etc everything working right…..ran virus scans in by several different products…and even malware scans….all of this with the definitions updated……Nothing found….

He then tried to boot into windows again, and the same thing……even tried a different monitor, same thing…….Tried to boot back into safe mode……it came up but with a blank black screen with mouse cursor, and it said safe-mode in the corners….but nothing else…….nothing worked…..but the mouse cursor will move.

Tried to re-install OS Windows XP Pro Service pack 1.from disk….it freezes at installing windows……with 34 minutes left to go…..tried 3 times…….Nothing……exactly the same spot every time…..progress bar says “installing devices” and it freezes every time right underneath the first E, in devices….every time.

Hi nogard...

Are there any USB devices connected to this machine? If there are, disconnect them and try again.

If the mouse and keyboard connect via USB, you'll need to disconnect them, too. Round up a PS2 keyboard and mouse to use during the installation.

Onboard Modem and NIC, too? See if he can disable those (and sound) in BIOS Setup. Also make sure that Virus Protection is disabled in the BIOS.

Here's a thought...while in BIOS Setup...set it to use Default or Fail Safe Default settings. (usually by pressing F5) Be sure to save the settings (F10) when exiting BIOS.

He's alright...whew!

Set the BIOS to Default and try the setup again. We may have to pull a log off this thing to see what's hanging it.
