Double click on "System". In the System Properties window, click the System Restore tab. In System Restore, tic the box to "Turn off system restore on all drives". Click "Apply" then "Ok".

Close all open windows and reboot.

Let me know when it has restarted.

Great! :whistling: We're making a little progress.

Try regedit from Run.

What's next?

ok, i have some programs i tried to uninstall via add/remove programs but couldn't remove them, some just click and d go no where some I get messages for ...and if i right click on START and SEARCH i can't get the search option up.

Also i noticed in the registry there are a lot of entires for a lot of software like kazaa, and bearshare (he had heaps of crap loaded on there)....do we need to get rid of all that?

Everything you just mentioned is malware related. Can you get that machine online and get a log posted in Malware. I really don't think we're going to have a whole lot more luck running fixes until the crud's gone. Just for kicks, download HiJackThis from the link in my signature and post a log for me... :whistling:

OH, here's another...
when I RUN/SFC i get a windows File Protection box that says
"files that are required for windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL cache. Insert your windows xp professional service pack 1 cd now"

I've checked , and double checked using Belarc and XP HOME is definitely installed. Why ask for professional???????(he only has that restore cd anyway)..so i inserted the cd and it gave me 4 options
1.Install windows xp
2.install optional windows components
3.perform additional tasks
4. Check system compatibility

Try option 3...let's see what it's going to offer you.

What kind of cd you got for your machine?

What they gave me seems to be a boot cd not an xp cd(they were given it by the peron who built their pc) it says on the cd "productr ecovery cd-rom" the software included on this recovery cd-rom was pre-installed on your hard drive...etc etc

options in additional tasks are
set up remote desktop connection\set up a home or small office network
transfer files and settings
browse this cd
view the release notes
install Net.Framework
back

Nothing there of any value. Let the malware folks clean that rig up and I'll bet it'll run a whole lot better...it really IS a mess.

We can probably get a good fix on it then...nothing's going to stick on it in it's current state. We'd be wasting our time trying.
