My system is a P4 3.0 prescott and i think i am having a overheating problem.Motherboard monitor says cpu runs at 53c at idle and during game play it go's to 75c. I have cleaned the fans and cpu heat sink with compressed air. System crashes to desktop sometimes and other times it reboots. Problem only started last week. Also when i undo the hold levers on the cpu fan and heat sink it seems loose. Should it be firm to the cpu.

Yes it should be pretty firm. Also go into the control panel then double click "system" then go to the advance tab then click settings under startup and recovery now uncheck Automatically restart. Next time it crashes you should recieve a blue screen write down what it says and report back here.

Even without the log it sounds like a clear temperature problem your CPU temp is far to high and is causing a temperature shut down to prevent damage to the CPU.

Your idle temp is what you should be expecting under load, 75 is definatley far to high rule of thumbe is if its above 60 turn it straight off and start worrying.

What you need to do is remove the heat sink clean it with some cotton buds and alcohol dry it off then apply new thermal compound, srctic silver 5 is the best compound if you dont have any. Only use a little you dont need alot its just a thin layer to help heat conduction from the cpu to the HSF. Also you cant take the HSF off or loosen it so that air gets in this well damage the compound and reduce its effectiveness significantly every time you take off the HSF you should clean and apply new compound but unless you are changing the cpu or intentionally want to apply new compound it should never come off.

Even if you have another problem causing a crash you do have a heat problem and a fairly serious one. Although it sounds like a heat crash.

Thanks , I will do as you say but are there any sites to show how to get fan and heat sink off as i can undo two levers but can't see how assembly comes apart. It is genuine p4 boxed unit and have never pulled this style apart before. Thanks for your help.
