Firefox Bookmarks Do Not work any more

I am so frustrated! I know next to nothing about computers. I use Firefox and it works great until now. All of a sudden all my bookmarks are gone. When I want to bookmark something. It just sits there and doesn't do it. What can I do?
please someone help and in simplified terms please!!!!!
