Laptop screen color distortion

my laptop, which is an old Dell Inspiron 4000, which i have loaded XP onto it and added more ram, is having color issues with the screen. At random times, i havent really noticed a pattern as to when it happenes, the colors on the screen with start to get all weird. It is not on the entire screen, but at least 75% of it. I was wondering if this was a software problem or hardware problem and if there are any ways to fix it.
