How Do I Get Rid Of AOL?

Hi, I bought a new laptop a couple of weeks ago and it came pre-installed with a load of software that there's no way I'd ever use, including AOL. I managed to get everything else uninstalled, but AOL won't go.

When setup starts, the uninstaller searches for versions of AOL. It used to report that no versions of AOL could be found, but now it just crashes.

Can anyone help?

Did you go to start>>run and type in msconfig

Go to Start up programs and see if aol is listed there. If it is, uncheck it.

No, but I have done now and there was no entries.

Now what? Can I just delete the program files?

Um, the msconfig startup thing?

logonstudio (unchecked)

Are any of those AOL things? I didn't think they were, because none of them have commands in the AOL Folder... I'm probably wrong though?

I think you may have additional problems. Did you install messenger plus with the optional sponsor program?

Please RIGHT-CLICK HERE and Save As (in IE it's "Save Target As", in FF it's "Save Link As") to download Silent Runners.
  • Save it to the desktop.
  • Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
  • You will receive a prompt:
    • Do you want to skip supplementary searches?
      click NO
  • If you receive an error just click OK and double-click it to run it again - sometimes it won't run as it's supposed to the first time but will in subsequent runs.
  • You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done, let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
  • Once you receive the prompt All Done!, open the text file on the desktop, copy that entire log, and paste it here.
*NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

* Click here to download HJTsetup.exe
  • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

I didn't install the sponsor package (it looked a bit dodgy... and it even said it was adware in the installer)... I'll do that Silent Runner thing and HJT thing too though, just in case. I hope I've got nothing bad :whistling:

what is windows auto clean?

Please disable windows defender. It may prevent you from fixing the machine.

Go to add/remove programs and uninstall messenger plus 3. We can reload it later and make sure we don't get any of the junk that comes along with it.

Run hijack this and put an x next to this entry.

Okay, I'm on it now. Well, not right now... but I'm just about to start it.

Oh, and Windows auto clean. I think it comes with Madonote which is a cool program that lets you change the icons of stuff on your computer. It's got a thing on it that allows you to clear your Run command history (at logon) ... I think that's this. I've never had any problems with it, and it's never come up in a malware scan as something bad.

Oh, and I don't know if this'll affect the results... but I installed a new driver for the touchpad and I downloaded the latest release of Windows Live Messenger. Sorry, I completely forgot I had someone looking through the stuff in my computer while I was downloading/installing it, I would've waited otherwise. If it's a problem, I can uninstall if you want. And, with Windows Defender to disable it do I just exit it? I used the close X at the top, but it was still running I think?

Oh, I found it! You have to click on the help icon when the window is open and choose exit windows defender. :whistling:

Make sure Windows defenderis not running>> you can go to start>>run and type in msconfig

Go to the start up tab and uncheck it.

Run hijack this and put a check mark next to this one.

O11 - Options group: [INTERNATIONAL] International*

REboot and see if that makes a difference. :whistling:
