I have this Toshiba Satellite A75-S229, and sometimes the sound works and sometimes it doesn't. Here's a screenshot of my audio properties.

Windows reports my audio device working properly, the drivers are installed, when I pick a windows sound and click play it appears to play, but no sound. The correct sound device is selected from all drop down lists, also there are no other choices anyways. I may reboot now and be pleasantly greeted with the windows startup sound. It's weird, I'm all out of ideas.

Have you tried updating the sound card drivers???? If nothing fixes it then buy a pcmcia sound card that fits in your notebook. Creative makes some pcmcia sound cards for notebooks..

Nice! I didn't even think of that. I don't even care about the ac97, I'll just buy a pcmcia card, thanks. To think it was that easy haha. The drivers are the latest ones from Toshiba's website by the way, I tried new ones from realtek and it causes a bsod.

Your welcome, the pcmcia is the way to go but they will be just guessing about $70-$80 US dollars for an audigy 2 of some type.

Well I'm not going to be using any sort of external speakers, because I feel that defeats my purpose of using a laptop, so I don't really need any sort of extreme sounds. I mainly am going to be using this rig for regular internet type of stuff, and playing Unreal Tournament 2004 in the airport so I don't get so bored

the audigy 2 zs is the one im talking about for that price range, I havnt looked for any others before.. I mainly work on desktops.

Any experiences with USB sound devices? I'm worried an extra card may drain alot of battery power too. I'll let you know what I decide on though. Thank you.

Cant say ive seen alot of them they would drain your battery life but nothing huge. Did you gat the right drivers from realtek, should be version a386 is the latest drivers for ac 97 sound.

I did find some drivers from the site, and the seem to be working, but I'll wait and see what happens.

Well if it makes you feel any better I can't go swimming cuz there was the largest raw sewage spill in history about 3 months ago and the water is still green...
