hi everyone! i just want to thank anyone who helps/reads the topic because i know you are all taking out your own time to help us on here. thanks.

alright, well when i open anything to look at files (like my pictures, my music.. anything) i can't drag-drop, right-click, or copy-paste or anything because then explorer shuts down. something comes up that looks like this:


when i click show error report (in case it helps here):


actually, it's a little bit better now because last night and for the past two weeks when i would click to get out of there, almost all the programs would shut down. but now the folder window just goes away. unless i click debugger, then the programs shut down and something about DrWatson Postmortem Debugger comes up. this is the error report:


i've read some about drwatson on other forums and stuff, apparently he's supposed to be there? unless he causes problems, which he is for me.

i did everything it said to do in the initial post about posting hijack-this logs. except there was one thing: when i tried to use trend house call, it would for for about 15 minutes then the window would just disappear. not really sure what it means, but it can't be good right?

I see two possibilities.
Please click Start -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs and uninstall these programs:

K-Lite Mega Codec Pack 1.38

See if that resolves the problem for you. If it doesn't, then uninstall this one also.

unfortunately, the problem still happens after deleting both those. it's weird though, it doesn't happen when i click the "sample music" folder that windows (or maybe windows media player) comes with. but it still happens with everything else.

should i try system restore? i've never perfectly understood it, like what would stay and what would go.

Did you reboot after you uninstalled those codecs?

With a system restore you would lose anything that you've downloaded, installed, or changed. It shouldn't remove your personal files, but I wouldn't count on it. Any recent files that you can't afford to lose, I would put onto a disk before you do the system restore. Then you can always move them back again.

Let me know if the problem still exists after a reboot and we'll keep looking.

Ok, let's do some more digging.

Click Start -> Run -> eventvwr.msc

Look in SYSTEM and APPLICATIONS for anything in the last day.
Double click on anything you see with a red X, press the Copy button, and then paste it here in your next reply.

I've seen one of these before where you are using the new IE 7 beta, but the error is coming up under IE 6.

Let's try a few more.

Go to Start > Run, type: inetcpl.cpl
Click OK.
Click the Advanced tab.
Under Browsing, uncheck the "Enable third-party browser extensions (requires restart)" check box.
Click OK.
Reboot your computer and see if that made a difference.



If not, let's go on to the next step.

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Option->View and check 'Show hidden files and folders' and uncheck 'Hide protected operating system files'. Go to your c: drive. Right click on the boot.ini file and go to Properties. Then double click on the boot.ini file to open it. Change the line that says /NoExecute=OptIn and change it to /NoExecute=AlwaysOff. Now save the file and close it.


Reboot and check for the usual error.



I want to work through the easy ones first, and then we'll move on to more complex fixes.

Go to Start > Control Panel

Double-Click User Accounts
Choose Create a new Account
Type any name for the account then click Next
Choose Computer Administrator then click Create Account

Log off your current account.

Reboot your computer, then log-in to the new account you just created.
Let me know if you get the same error.

Then reboot your computer and check for the same error.


If it's still there, let's get a different log and see if we find a clue.

Please RIGHT-CLICK HERE and Save As (in IE it's "Save Target As", in FF it's "Save Link As") to download Silent Runners.

• Save it to the desktop.
• Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
• You will receive a prompt:
  • Do you want to skip supplementary searches?
    click NO
• If you receive an error just click OK and double-click it to run it again - sometimes it won't run as it's supposed to the first time but will in subsequent runs.
