I recently replaced my hard drive with a new, identical drive from Dell.
I am using an Inspiron 5150 laptop and lately my hard drive seems to be working extra hard. In addition, the laptop gets very hot after a while. This occurs even without any running programs. Thanks in advance for any help.

laptops often get hot when using them especially if you're plugged into the power socket. are you sure it's the harddrive that is making the sound? it could just be the fan. laptops getting hot is quite normal
if the computer starts breaking a lot...or burns a hole in the table there is probably somthing wrong other than that probably dont worry that much

Also, laptops don't have a lot of space to circulate air around. You really need to make sure nothing is blocking the vents on the laptop. Putting it on a pillow while on your lap will just block air flow and let heat build up in your comp. It's best to use it on a flat surface with nothing around the vents/fans.

I do always use the laptop on a flat surface and I know some fan noise, etc is normal, but I think theres definitely an issue with this new hard drive. The drive sounds like it's constantly struggling, which never happened with the old (identical) hard drive. Any thoughts?

is it that clicking sound old hard drives make? possible you laptop is running some program that your not aware of? like spy ware or something. i think it's the cpu and battery that make the most heat in a laptop so if some background program is using the cpu which causes the hard drive to work which causes the laptop to heat up...i actually have no idea
