hey guys
heres my situation

i have a Tosibha Tecra laptop that was previously for work. as i left my job, they cleared everything on the computer, only to reload windows xp and afew other standards.

at home, when i plug in my adsl, the internet doesnt work

i assume i now have to load something or change settings to set this up to work? do i have to go as far as d/l a modem driver? (someone suggested that). or do i just have to go to my control panel and fix the settings?

i'm a computer novice here, so bare with me

thanks guys!

Hi mosdef...

Open Device Manager and look for any yellow ? or ! associated with the Network Adapter. Do you see any?

(To access Device Manager...right click on "My Computer" and choose "Properties". Under the "Hardware" tab, click the "Device Manager" button.)

Open Control Panel and double click the "Internet Options". Under the "Connections" tab, click on the "LAN Settings" button. Is "Automatically detect settings" checked?

Go back to Device Manager, in Network Adapters, right click on Intel® PRO/100 VE Network Connection, and choose "Properties". Is the device enabled and working properly?

Download Winsock XP fix and run it. Cilck on Fix. This should repair your internet connection.

Is this computer linked to others via a router? If so, we may have to approach this differently.

-edit: hang on a second, I just saw your last post. My suggestion above will not work. Lemme make different instructions.

I need a description of your setup:

Is your laptop connected to the modem or router 1st?
