I have the following on my computer (based on an Ad-Aware scan): Win32.TrojanDownloader.Agent.al

This is what I have done so far:
- run AdAware and removed identified items
- run SpyBot and fixed identified items
- run my Norton Anti-Virus (no virus found)
- rebooted

Problems recur even after this. They include:
- home page of Internet Explorer is directed to "About: Blank" and it is a search engine of some type that appears
- if I change it to another home page in "Options", it reverts back to the "About: Blank" home page next time I open Explorer
- Internet Explorer now doesn't seem to work - encounters a "problem" and shuts down routinely

I have downloaded HijackThis and run a scan. Here is the log:

Hello

With no browser windows open when you start the fix, do the following:

Please download Intermute's CWShredder from here:
http://cwshredder.ne.../CWShredder.exe
Save it to the desktop and run it, and click "Fix" to remove the CWS infection.

Then please download About:Buster from here:
http://www.downloads...AboutBuster.zip
Unzip the files to a convenient location such as C:\AboutBuster, and run AboutBuster.exe. Read the instructions then click OK to proceed. Click "Check for Updates", and then "Download Updates" to update About:Buster to the newest version. Then click Start to begin the scan. If prompted to end the Explorer.exe process, click Yes. Your desktop may disappear --- this is normal. Allow the program to scan twice, and when complete click "Save Log". This will create a text file called "AB Logfile.txt" in the folder where About:Buster is saved.

Restart your computer.

Run hijackthis and save the logfile. Post the hijackthis logfile, along with the entire contents of the ABout:Buster logfile here for me.

Hello

Boot your computer into safe mode.

Run hijackthis and fix the following with nothing open:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0DFBD1CD-D3E2-7D8F-E66F-7CC3DEDD603B} - C:\WINDOWS\winqt32.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [crvn.exe] C:\WINDOWS\crvn.exe
O16 - DPF: {11111111-1111-1111-1111-111111113457} - file://c:\explorer.cab

Then open windows explorer and find the following files and delete them if there:

Did what you asked. When I went into Explorer to delete the 2 files you noted, I found one of them (crvn.exe). The other one wasn't there. However, I did notice the following two files: crvn.exe.bak and winzi32.dll

I didn't delete them, but since they looked similar to the files you noted, I thought I'd tell you.

How is it running? Looks pretty good. :tazz:

The following are not necessarily spyware/malware, but we suggest you place a check mark next to the following entries, as these programs may be taking up system resources.

Please read through the instructions before you start (you may want to print this out).

Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked.
Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"

For anyone using Windows XP, 'Search' will not automatically show hidden files even if your folder options settings are set to do that. Do this so you can see hidden files and folders - click here http://www.davehigha...ds/xphidden.zip to download xphidden.zip. Extract xphidden.reg from the zip file and save it to the desktop. When done, double-click the xphidden.reg and when asked to merge say yes.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Here's the fix:

Important Step
1. Go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok
Scroll down and find the service called:

Network Security Service (NSS)

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows. If you dont find this service listed go ahead with the next steps.

2. Reboot into safe mode by tapping F8 while your computer is booting up.

3. CLOSE ALL WINDOWS AND BROWSERS Scan with Hijack This and put checks next to all the following, then click "Fix Checked"

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\lzxzb.dll/sp.html#28129
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\lzxzb.dll/sp.html#28129
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = res://C:\WINDOWS\lzxzb.dll/sp.html#28129
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\lzxzb.dll/sp.html#28129
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\lzxzb.dll/sp.html#28129
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\lzxzb.dll/sp.html#28129
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {F604D27D-2FA1-6463-FBD6-675B3EA2615B} - C:\WINDOWS\netgz.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ipyd.exe] C:\WINDOWS\ipyd.exe
O23 - Service: Network Security Service (NSS) ( 6Q'8) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\netxv.exe" /s (file missing)

4. Delete the following files if present:
If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. if it is uncheck it and try again.

C:\WINDOWS\lzxzb.dll
C:\WINDOWS\netgz.dll
C:\WINDOWS\ipyd.exe

5. Run AboutBuster . This will scan your computer for the bad files and delete them. Save the report (copy and paste into notepad or wordpad and save as a .txt file) and post a copy back here when you are done with all the steps.

6. Scan with AdAware and let it remove any bad files found.

7. Clean out temporary and TIF files. Go to Start > Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure these 3 are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

8. Double click on the cwsserviceremove and when asked to merge say yes.

9. Run CW-Shredder - Hit the FIX button - let it run and fix what it finds.

10. Reboot into normal mode.

11. Download the Hoster from here http://members.aol.c...bee/hoster.zip. Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program.

then reboot and post a fresh Hijack This log to see how we did.

I think you (we??? no you...lol) did it! You guys are amazing.

Here's the scoop...

I did what you said. A few things of note:

- in item #4 of your e-mail, you said to delete 3 files if there. 2 of them were. But netgz.dll wasn't. However, I did notice two files like that: netbc.exe an netnf.exe I didn't delete them but thought they might be of relevance???

- in item #8, you said to "double-click on cwsserviceremove and when asked to merge say yes". I don't think I have cwsserviceremove...does that pose a problem???

I'll post the hijackthis log below, but before I do, can you let me know whether I should reverse some of the early items in your e-mail (e.g. unchecking "hid protected op sys files") and disabling NSS? If you could let me know, I would greatly appreciate it.

Here's the hijackthis log:

We did it! There's no random garbage running and nothing bad in your log anymore! It's gone.

Please read all the following and set it all up!:

Everything looks great --- your HijackThis log is completely clean. ;)
Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems.

1) Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows, This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here.

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

IE-SPYAD
A tutorial on using IE-SPYAD to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here

Keeping these programs up-to-date and running them regularly can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.o...oducts/firefox/

4) If you are paying for norton and it's up to date and you want to keep it, go ahead, otherwise if you aren't paying for norton and it's not up to date, I suggest you uninstall it. AVG makes an excellent free antivirus client; it may be downloaded here. Please make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

Please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place

Hopefully this should take care of your problems! Good luck. :tazz:

Thanks again.

One last question...should I reverse some of the early items in your e-mail from 2 posts ago (e.g. unchecking "hid protected op sys files") and disabling NSS?

If you could let me know, I would greatly appreciate it.

It's no big deal if you have all files unhidden. If you want to hide them again so you don't accidently delete a legit system file, you can do so. Not a big deal. and No you don't need to enable that service, you shouldn't at all. The bad hijacker was just using that type of service to run from.
