Cant install anything (Windows Installer not working)

Click start then run, type sfc /scannow then press enter, you need the XP CD and Windows File Protection will show a blue onscreen progress bar, when the bar goes, reboot


This does not work...i type it, hit enter and a screen pops up for a split second (cant even see what it looks like)..then nothing happens...

what to do?

Can you run it from task manager, file, new task, type sfc /scannow then press enter

i ran the chkdsk


first time it said cannot check disk

then i ran again and it said checked disk...and that it was clean

both only took like 30 seconds

should i move on to tune up?

Try chkdsk /f /r from task manager, it should say the volume is locked, type Y to run at next boot, then you press enter and reboot

Otherwise, run tune up

well i had a windows installer problem like you.i uninstalled it cause 2 windows installer was in my computer

in my add and remove programs it showed one but when i access the make of my computer which is ibm

thats how i found out i had 2 windows installer so i uninstall it at add and remove and computer work fine.

Hi Keith,

I finished everything you said..chkdsk worked...but I cannot install Tune Up. usualy error (cannot access windows installer...)

What now?

also how can we tell if i have multiple installers working against each other.

Use search, include hidden and system files, look for installer

I cant tell if I have multiple windows installer ....what would the file actually be called and what would the type be?

Also I ran the chkdsk last night and still cannot install anything..any other ideas

Look in add / remove, tick show updates
