I'm not exactly sure where we are right now.....

IF this had been XP Pro retail or upgrade, you could have purchased a legitimate copy and then we could have walked you through changing the product key

However, since you have a volume license edition (also known as corporate, but MS hates that phrase), you will not be able to purchase a legitimate key--the volume license keys are not available to single users.

You cannot use a different key on this version, since the product ID for your installation will not accept a key other than a VLK key.

Side NOTE--there are "ILLEGAL" keys for the VL edition. Keys that have got out in the "wild" and are readily distributed on the Internet have been flagged as illegal. Legitimate license holders were issued new keys and the procedure for changing them.

Given your sitiuation, I sincerely doubt you need Windows XP Pro. Do you have a windows cd, or did this come preinstalled?

thanks for everything you guys and... i do know how to change my windows key and i also know how many keygenerators are out there creating windows product keys, but microsoft updates very often there humongous database of invalid product keys which means that even if i got a legitimate key w/ a keygen tommorrow id be running an illegal version again. keygens are almost extinct. there was also the WGA and WPA cracks which are currently updated but i did not want to modify my software that way for obvious reasons. So i did what was best.... reformat the hard drive and reinstall windows xp home SP1. i hated it at first but then realized it actually help me for 2 reasons.

1.- it cleaned out all the junk on my PC and unnecasery apps.
2.- Microsoft, well who knows what it will do next with genuine windows, probably isue a hidden update forcing illegal users to buy a legal version.

It was the best thing to do and i like it know that i did it.

Thanks for all your help and support.

the use of key generators is ALWAYS illegal....no if's ands or buts....microsoft does not issue a keygenerator...and they never will...they give you this nifty little sticker with the os...while i am glad that you have decided to go the legal route here....be warned that we won't tollerate discussions of key generators (for anyone who seached for keygens and found this link)...

Since you reinstalled your legit XP Home SP1, go back to the MS site and get SP2 (You could have done that and skipped SP1 since it's a cumulative update) Check for any other updates you might need- I have 100 or so, and some are tagged SP3.
