Do you have a valid XP cd?

If so, place it in your CD ROM drive and follow the instructions below

Start > Run > cmd then type

sfc /scannow (note the space)

let this run untill you get a message saying it is complete.

SFC - system file checker, retrieves the correct version of the file from %Systemroot%\System32\Dllcache or the Windows installation source files, and then replaces the incorrect file.

If you want to see what was replaced, right click My Computer > manage, expand event viewer > system.

I dont have it. Thanks for the fast reply! ive tryed scanning registry for errors and ive checked the drivers. Anything else I could do to find the problem? There is no file listed for the IRQL_LESS_OR_NOT_EQUAL.

Thanks,

Kurt

atapi.sys is a windows file that drives your CD-ROM, DVD_rom, etc

If that is your failing driver, you need to run the sfc /scannow to replace the corrupted file with a corrected version.

That would be the first step.

Failing that, is there anything that could be interferring with the atapi driver? Do you use a virtual drive program (daemon-tools, alcohol, conecd, etc)?

If so, try removing the program and seeing if the problem goes away, or try updating the program to the most recent patches

Yeah I did. I still have the drives I've unistalled the program and the virtual drives stayed but ive deleted the registry keys see if that does anything.
