Does the external still have any warranty?

If you feel like giving it a go, uninstall audacity, clear prefetch, run tune up, install audacity

Have a look here

I'm sure the drive has no warranty; it's 2 years old. The machine was "made" for me by a friend. I do know where the parts are from. I will dig around for the paperwork and check. Thanks for that suggestion; I never thought to check warranty.
I will go ahead and give the steps a try again.
BTW, there are a pile of resources on that page. I bookmarked it.

Wondering if trying another type of audio grabber will get the same response

I'm still running the tests in Tune up. What's weird is Audacity works fine on the other computer on the network which is much older and a lot less horsepower.
I'm pretty much of a techno-dunce, but it seems that this related to the slow loading of a lot of programs.
I can use Total Recorder on mine without a problem. Why I wanted Audacity was 2-fold. Recording of webinars on the kids computer andd transferring to mine. I think I may be able to do that by doing all the work on theirs and converting to mp3.
The other reason is that I plan to be doing some audio for some of my sites and the price is right for editing software.
I'll get back when I finish the tests and re-install.
Thanks again for your patience.

Have a look at synctoy from my signature, you set a shared folder on each PC which has permission to change files, it needs to be installed on an XP PC but will sync with folders on a 98 PC etc

Anything you put in one folder gets transferred to the other folder, along with any changes you make to the files, even if you remove a comma from a sentence, it will update

Maybe you can edit on the other PC and then bat the files across while the problem is resolved

While I continue to sort through this, I know that I can make donations as appreciation.
I did a cursory look and couldn't find out where to do so.
If you could point me to it, I'd like to do it.

Some don't have the option, you can use the contact us to ask if they have any suggestions

My preference would be for getting this resolved first

Ok. I am certainly satisfied with the level of help and patience you've put in. I also appreciate your willingness to sticking it through with me.
Does my earlier analogy about the closet and the house make sense?
I have optimized as far as I know how but slow loading persists.
Somehow, I can't get over the feeling that is my Audacity problem since Word and Excel take what seems an inordinate amount of time, too.
Another thing that takes a long time. I use mailwasher to filter my emails. When I click on a link through there, it takes forever to open the browser and find the site.
If I just use the IE shortcut on my desktop to open a browser, it's almost instantaneous.

Computers and I sometimes have a love/hate relationship.

Usually it's an anti virus scan which holds up Word / Office

The size of the drive should not matter too much, it's a combination of installed RAM Memory, virtual memory and processor speed which determines load times

If you can install audiograbber from the earlier link, see how it performs, if you get a similar reaction then it probably isn't with the application, (audacity)

Hi, Keith.
Just got around to checking out the audio tools you recommended.
Downloaded a couple.
It appears Wavepad is close to Audacity. I opened it with no problem or lengthy loading time.
We may have solved that problem.
Thanks a lot.
Now, we had discussed donations...

Maybe it's a quirk with the PC and audacity

I do not have an option for donations, I only arrived here looking for help and stayed around a while

A couple have asked about donations and my response has been to say the next time they see a worthwhile cause they feel inclined to donate to, then they can do so from both of us, should they wish to do so
