Help with connecting microphone to my computer not working?

Hmmm I disconnected my microphone from my computer and now I can't redo it.
I put it in the right connection holes and all. It just doesn't record. I doubt my mic is broken what to do?
Help is much aprreciated

Microphone input may be 'disabled' in your soundcard's software.
1. Open 'Sounds and Audio Devices' in Control panel.
2. In the 'Volume' tab, click 'Advanced'.
3. Make sure the 'mute' option for microphone is NOT ticked.

Also, in the microphone control panel there may be an Advanced button in which there is a checkbox for adding boost to the signal. Make sure that is checked.
