From time to time, Rundll32.exe hangs my computer and takes 99% of my CPU usage. It does not go down from there, so my system runs unbelievably slow. I have to turn off my laptop (just restarting does not necessarily fix the problem). When I do shut down, it takes Windows several minutes to shut down. Before turning off, two error messages pop-up saying that these programs are not responding. I then have to manually select "Shut Down". The first program showing the error message is "ccApp" and the second one that follows is "Rundll32.exe".

I've run the recommended programs from this website (AdAware, Spybot and CWShredder), but they did not detect anything significant, and the problem persists.

This problem is very similar to a posting submitted on 7/10/04 by solista276.

I've contacted both IBM and Norton, neither of which were able to help.

Regardless of what file type it is, my question is how to solve my problem. When Rundll32.exe is taking up 99% of my CPU usage and nothing I do fixes the problem, I'm just looking for a solution.

There is no need to wait for the problem to occur again before running HiJack This! The sooner you get your log posted the better.

Make sure to disconnect from the Internet, close all windows and programs, then run HiJack This.

To know the module which is executed by Rundll32, proceed further. Without any third-party tools, here is a neat way to track down what the Rundll32 is executing. Open a Command Prompt window and type the following command:

tasklist /m /fi "IMAGENAME eq rundll32.exe" >C:\rundll32.txt

"IMAGENAME eq rundll32.exe" taken from your task manager process list

Thanks very much for the tip. I'll give it a try and hopefully that will work. It's ironic that the first location I looked for a solution was IBM. One would think that they would have the answer immediately. Instead, they suggested that I do a factory reinstall of my hard drive. That obviously did not work. Thanks IBM. Ugghhh!!
